Full Job Description

Job Overview

The Medical Director is a psychiatrist who, in addition to evaluating, diagnosing, and treating persons served with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, also provides supervisory consultation. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results. Expected to provide excellent care and compassion in every counter and across programs, aligned with the organizations core values. The Medical Director will provide leadership to members of the medical department and assure that high quality care is delivered and documented in accordance with state and federal regulations, and current professional standards of practice. Administratively, the Medical Director is responsible for meeting applicable CCBHC, MDHHS and CARF quality measures. The tasks of the Medical Director are generated by the policies established by the Board of Directors and the direction established by the Chief Executive Officer.

Responsibilities
Performs formal psychiatric evaluations, including diagnostic interview for the purpose of clarifying diagnoses and obscure situations including treatment complications or non-responsive care.

Meets with assigned persons served to complete medication reviews.
Maintains current and accurate medical records on assigned persons served.
Prescribes appropriate medications to foster agreed-upon treatment goals.
Initiates, secures and interprets requisite medical data and laboratory evaluations. Integrates medical information into the medical treatment regime of the person served and indicates their review of this information by initialing reports, lab work, etc.
Evaluates and authorizes alternative orders of treatment when appropriate.
Prescribes psychological testing, physical therapy and evaluation, speech therapy and evaluation, occupational therapy and evaluation, as well as other health services, when appropriate.
Functions as an integral member of the treatment team and is held ultimately responsible for the psychiatric and medical care of those persons served with whom they have significant contact. The Medical Director’s authority in treatment decisions increases with the emergency of the clinical situation.
Review, approve, and sign all plan of services that require approval by a physician.
Provides clinical consultation to the Triage Team and Hospital Liaison.
Provides supervision for the agency’s contractual psychiatrists and nurse practitioners.
Provides limited after-hours medical coverage by making themselves available by phone or attempting to coordinate coverage with other agency prescribers.
Provides community involvement with the Probate Court and McLaren Lapeer Region for certification of involuntary patient admissions, as necessary.

Essential Functions

Participates in establishment, implementation, and coordination of the medical / psychiatric policies of Lapeer County Community Mental Health.
Advises the Chief Executive Officer on medical policy and treatment issues. (MHC 330.1231) and provides consultation to the Chief Executive Officer, administrative staff, clinical supervisors, and line staff.
Document all services within twenty-four hours of the date of a person served visit and in accordance with state/federal guidelines and LCCMH policies and procedures.
Performs chart reviews for the other providers working in the agency.
Responsible for supervising contractual psychiatrists and nurse practitioners and providing clinical supervision of the activities of the medical department.

Employment Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from an accredited school of medicine.
Current DEA registration.
Licensed by the State of Michigan to practice medicine.
Eligible for Board Certification in Psychiatry.
Meets State of Michigan continuing medical education (CME) requirements of 150 hours.
Has knowledge of community mental health practice and the Person-Centered Planning process.
Demonstrates good organizational skills.
