Jefferson County Teachers Association

Communications Director

Do you want to be a part of telling the story of Kentucky's educators and working class while also being a part of the labor movement in Louisville and in Kentucky?

The Jefferson County Teachers Association is a decades-old Teacher’s union that serves certified educators in Jefferson County Public Schools. We are an affiliate of the Kentucky Education Association, and the National Education Association, the largest labor union in the country.

We are hiring a Communications Director to assist in internal and external communications, brand curation and awareness, education, training, and mobilization. This position may also include coordination with our lobbying efforts, political strategy and legislative action, and coalition and union organizing.

Skills and Qualifications:

- Ability to develop long-term communications strategies that align with the organization's goals.
- Ability to craft press releases, speeches, internal communications, and digital content.
- Experience handling media inquiries, building media contacts, and conducting press conferences.
- Ability to produce content across social media platforms and digital communication channels to drive engagement and outreach.
- Proficiency in capturing compelling pictures and video.
- Ability to design effective content for social media and print flyers.
- Experience giving presentations and acting as a spokesperson for the organization.
- Craft strategic messaging for campaigns and overseeing brand messaging and ensuring consistency across all platforms.
- Organizational skills to oversee multiple projects, meet deadlines, and manage a budget.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee and maintain internal and external communication channels
Develop and implement communication strategies to support union organizing, legislative advocacy, political activities, union action support, and other mobilization efforts.
Oversee and manage member to member communications
Oversee social media presence, member outreach landscapes, and digital campaigns.
Manage and aid Organization Leadership in media relations and public appearances; building and maintaining strong relationships with the press, including pitching stories and op-eds, managing media inquiries, organizing press events, and developing media materials and messaging.
Legislative education, communication, advocacy that may include but is not limited to; monitoring key legislation and meetings of the Kentucky General Assembly, maintaining grassroots legislative advocacy through rapid response action plans including email, phone, and media campaigns with members and allies
Supporting political strategy via messaging and comms

Preferred Experience in the Labor movement, political campaigns, and the legislative process.

*Flexibility to work irregular hours when needed.

*This is a role based in Louisville, KY, with some, limited travel.

Other Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree minimum
Valid driver’s license
Must have high degree of interpersonal skills to work with a diverse membership, leadership and staff as well as those outside of JCTA
Strong professional and personal characteristics including dependability, flexibility, and ability to plan and manage one’s time effectively and prioritize duties

Salary and Benefits:

Salary and benefits are determined by the contract negotiated between the JCTA Board of Directors, Management and the Staff Organization representing the professional and associate employees of JCTA.
