Full Job Description

The Assessment Assistant I provides entry‑level clerical, administrative, and customer service support for the County Assessor’s Office. This position assists in maintaining accurate property assessment records, processing documents, updating databases, and helping the public with basic assessment‑related inquiries. Work is performed under close supervision and follows established policies, procedures, and statutory requirements.

Essential Job Functions

Enter, update, and maintain property assessment data in office systems, including ownership changes, address updates, exemptions, and valuation notices.
Process building permits, sales questionnaires, homestead exemption applications, and related assessment documents.
Scan, file, index, and maintain digital and physical records, ensuring accuracy and organization.
Prepare routine reports, mailings, and documents needed for the annual assessment cycle.
Respond to public inquiries in person, by phone, and by email regarding property records, ownership, exemptions, and general assessment procedures.
Assist taxpayers in locating property information, completing forms, and navigating available online tools.
Refer complex questions to senior staff, appraisers, or supervisors when appropriate.
Review property records for completeness and flag discrepancies for follow‑up.
Assist with updates related to parcel splits/combines, new construction, or ownership changes.
Maintain confidentiality and follow established security procedures when handling sensitive information.
Provide clerical support to appraisers during review periods, including preparing property reports, filing photographs, and organizing documentation.
Assist in assembling materials for valuation notices, Board of Equalization hearings, appeals, or recheck mailings.
Help manage seasonal workloads during peak assessment periods.
All other duties as assigned.

Preferred Talents

Ability to learn state statutes and county policies related to property assessment.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Ability to maintain professionalism when interacting with the public.
Basic math and analytical skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Experience in clerical work, administrative support, real estate, property records, or local government.
Familiarity with GIS systems, land records, or appraisal/assessment terminology.
Ability to read simple property descriptions, maps, or building permits (or willingness to learn).

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Basic computer skills, including data entry and office software.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Effective communication and customer service skills.
