Position Summary

The Extrusion Operator at Belden/Alpha Wire tends extrusion machines in a continuous production environment to manufacture high-quality wire and cable products. This role involves following production specifications, setting up and operating machinery, performing quality checks, and adhering to safety guidelines to meet daily production goals in our job shop manufacturing plant.

Essential Functions

Machine Setup and Preparation

Read Shop Orders and Manufacturing Specifications to determine machine setup, required materials, and production quantities.
Verify raw materials delivered match the Manufacturing Specification.
Set temperature profiles on extruders based on material requirements.
Select and install tips and dies into the crosshead, ensuring proper positioning for concentricity.

Machine Operation

String up the production line, adjusting air pressure on dancers to maintain proper wire tension.
Adjust extruder and capstan ratios to achieve specified dimensions.
Set sparkers to the correct voltage and configure capstan and take-up gear ratios for efficient operation.
Set up ink jet printers, inputting and verifying print legends as required.

Quality Control and Inspection

Test tensile and elongation properties, adjusting wire pre-heat or quench water temperature as needed.
Inspect start-up samples and subsequent reels for dimensional conformance to specifications, making adjustments as necessary.
Adjust traverse settings on take-up to ensure a smooth, high-quality package.
Attach production tags to conforming materials and stop tags to non-conforming materials.

Documentation and Reporting

Record completed work accurately on production logs and daily machine reports.
Collaborate with the production team to ensure accurate documentation and smooth workflow.

Safety and Maintenance

Operate all machinery in compliance with OSHA safety standards and company policies.
Perform routine checks on extrusion equipment and report maintenance needs to supervisors.
Maintain a clean and safe work area by following established procedures.

Other Duties

Follow supervisor instructions for additional production tasks as needed.
Support the 55-employee team in maintaining efficient operations in our fast-paced plant.

Qualifications

Skills

Strong verbal and written communication skills for coordinating with supervisors and documenting production activities.
Basic math skills for measurements, calculations, and quality checks.
Proficiency in operating extrusion machinery and performing quality control checks.
Familiarity with production logging systems or quality management software is a plus.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent.
1-2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably with extrusion or wire and cable production.
Knowledge of wire and cable manufacturing processes or quality standards (e.g., ISO) is preferred.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Ability to stand for extended periods, perform repetitive tasks, and demonstrate manual dexterity.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
Comfortable working in a noisy manufacturing plant with exposure to moderate temperature variations.
Availability to work day, night, or rotating shifts and occasional overtime as needed.
