We are currently seeking an OPERATING ROOM REGISTERED NURSE WITH OR EXPERIENCE.
JOB SUMMARY:
Provides nursing care to the patient during the intraoperative phase. Performs nursing activities in the operating room where the circulating nurse is the patient's advocate. Answers patient needs by assisting the physician and person responsible for anesthesia care. Supervises Scrub Technician and other assistive personnel in the operating room.
JOB DUTIES:
1. Contributes to the progress and development of the approved Quality Management Program. Supports risk management and participates in programs directed to patient and staff safety.
2. Contributes to the quality management process; identifies role and contributions to functional teams; participates in data collection. Objectively evaluates suggestions, grievances, and processes to identify opportunities to improve performance and quality of care.
3. Communicates effectively with patients, visitors, physicians, and co‑workers. Interactions are respectful and courteous.
4. Communicates effectively and professionally using a translator when necessary. Documents that information received from the patient are disseminated to the appropriate people or departments.
5. Assists with orientation and training of new personnel and acts as a resource person for patient care problems.
6. Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities. Reports observed or suspected violations, hazards, and noncompliance according to Facility policy. Responds to emergency situations with competence and composure.
7. Interacts appropriately with various age groups. Accurately assesses and interprets age-specific patient data. Accurately interprets age-specific patient responses to questions and instructions. Provides care appropriate to the patient's age group.
8. Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel. Organizes nursing activities efficiently; considers staff abilities when delegating activities.
9. Confirms that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted standards of practice.
10. Prepares operating room according to the procedure to be performed and patient needs.
11. Transports patients to the operating room according to Facility policy, safety requirements, and patient needs.
12. Addresses patient needs during admission to the operating room with attention to requirements specific to the surgical setting. Addresses to surgical team any special needs of the patient including but not limited to allergies, disabilities, etc.
13. Identifies the patient and correct surgical intervention according to Facility policy and communicates with all surgical team members.
14. Reviews the patient's medical record and needs to plan care with other health care team members.
15. Explains intra-operative phase routine procedures and care to the patient.
16. Performs the circulating nurse's functions adhering to approved operating room procedures for the scheduled procedure.
17. Assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments before start of procedure; positions and adjusts equipment as required during the procedure.
18. Anticipates needs of the surgical team; assists anesthesia staff by supporting the patient during administration of anesthesia.
19. Assists with the proper and safe positioning of the patient.
20. Monitors compliance with principles of aseptic technique according to accepted standards.
21. Assists with identification and confirmation of operative site as directed by established procedure.
22. Provides for comfort in the physical environment by monitoring designated parameters.
23. Provides continuity of patient care by communicating with other perioperative care personnel and documenting records appropriately.
24. Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician. Accurately comprehends and interprets verbal orders and direction.
25. Documents patient care records and other forms accurately according to Facility policy.
26. Accurately advises others responsible for patient care about the patient's status.
27. Renders professional nursing care including administering medications, and initiating and maintaining intravenous fluids and blood products according to hospital policy and procedures. Understands the pharmacology and recognizes the side effects of medications administered. Performs lab draws and reports findings to appropriate personnel.
28. Responsible for performing Point of Care testing as assigned and trained, maintaining competency for testing and quality control procedures. Reports lab results and documents in the patient chart. Collects Blood samples for laboratory testing according to lab procedures.
29. Maintains a professional approach with confidentiality. Assures protection and privacy of health information as attained through written, electronic or oral disclosures.
30. Displays concern and initiative. Is resourceful and calm in emergencies.
31. Is prompt and efficient with minimal absences.
32. Cooperates and maintains good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, other departments, and visitors.
33. Seeks guidance and remains knowledgeable of, and complies with, all applicable federal and state laws, as well as hospital polices that apply to assigned duties.
34. Complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct.
35. Complies with federal and hospital requirements in the areas of protected health information and patient privacy.
36. Other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES:
Education: Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana.
Licensure: Currently licensed in the State of Indiana as a Registered Nurse. CPR and ACLS certification within 180 days of hire.
Experience: Prefer 1 year of RN experience in a surgical setting. Prefer experience in intra-operative environment.
Other Job Requirements: Excellent verbal communication skills necessary in order to instruct and comfort patients and their families. Maintain effective contacts with a variety of Hospital Personnel. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on assigned unit/department. Require constant and frequent judgment and response, occasionally in response to disasters or emergencies, actual events or drills. Require high-level visual and auditory acuity for timely response and patient care assessment activities. Ability to move quickly in response to physician and patient needs.
