Position Summary
The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality swim instruction to individuals and groups of all ages and skill levels. Instructors create a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment while promoting water safety, skill development, and confidence in the water.
Essential Responsibilities
- Teach swim lessons following established curriculum and safety guidelines.
- Develop lesson plans appropriate for participants' ages and abilities.
- Ensure the safety of all participants during lessons.
- Provide encouragement, constructive feedback, and positive reinforcement.
- Maintain accurate attendance and progress records.
- Communicate effectively with parents and participants regarding progress.
- Assist with maintaining a clean and safe pool environment.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow all facility procedures.
Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching swim lessons preferred, but not required.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work with children and adults of varying abilities.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications preferred, but not required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Knows the JCC swim lesson course materials and how to use them effectively.
- Answer member’s questions and concerns.
- Adapts teaching approaches to the experience and ability of participants to meet course objectives.
- Organizes the class environment to enhance individual and group performance and minimize distractions.
- Covers all material required in a course.
- Demonstrate the skills required in each level.
- Uses corrective feedback to evaluate participants’ progress and correct problems.
- Ensures that participants meet course completion requirements.
- Arrives at least 15 minutes prior to class. (Classes start and end on time).
- Prepares class sheets and equipment before class; i.e.: kickboards, fins, dive rings, etc.
- Wears suitable attire when teaching.
- Takes daily attendance, maintains class record sheets, and turns in upon completion of each session.
- Completes report cards upon completion of session
- Notifies Aquatics Leadership of any forms / paperwork needed.
- Maintains current certifications throughout employment.
- Assists with responding to emergencies quickly and professionally; assists rescue effort, if called upon as required by a guard, member, or staff person. Assesses each situation and determines with the team individual roles for various situations.
- Knows and discerns the JCC Pool Emergency Plan at any/all times in the event an emergency occurs.
- Maintains a professional and positive rapport with members and guests. Communicates with members in a polite and confident manner, and explains policies and practices in a way that enables members understand a situation or rationale for a policy.
- Informs Aquatics Leadership of situations that need immediate attention, including injury or accident reports, emergencies and all behavioral situations requiring follow up with members, staff, or parents.
- Attends mandatory meetings and in-service training such as all pre-season orientations, group re-certifications, weekly trainings during the summer, monthly trainings during the fall and spring semesters, and any additional in-service trainings deemed required by the Aquatics Director or Executive Director of the JCC.
- Responds professionally and immediately to direction given by Aquatics Director or MOD.
- Assists in every way to help the entire Aquatics Department develop a “culture of safety”, by :
- Participating in regular training, audits and testing with a positive and professional attitude;
- Accepting feedback, listening to observations, and responding immediately to recommendations from the Director or MOD;
- Understanding the more we test ourselves, the safer we become as a team.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Requires normal physical capabilities, including lifting or carrying light loads, reaching and standing, with emphasis on being in the pool for long periods of time. Requires being able to participate in a wide variety of activities and to maintain all certifications. Requires stamina to work long periods in a physically active environment. Requires dexterity with hands, speech, corrected hearing and vision within normal range.
Works in a well-lighted indoor pool year-round. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high depending on the number of members using the facility.

· The person in this position constantly communicates with others. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

· The person in this position may occasionally need to be able to distinguish odors.
· The person in this position will occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
