Job Description – Town of Kenduskeag – Part-Time Library Director

Title: Library Director

Department: Public Library

Reports To: Town Clerk/Library Committee/Select Board

Direct Supervisor: Town Clerk

Position Summary

The Part Time Library Director is responsible for the daily administration and operation of the municipal library. The Director manages core library services, maintains the collection, provides public assistance, and coordinates programming within the limits of part time hours. The Director ensures compliance with municipal policies, Select Board directives, Library Committee guidance, and Maine State Library requirements. Work requires independent judgment, demonstrated leadership, strong communication skills, and consistent public service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Administration & Management

Oversees daily library operations and ensures a safe, welcoming environment for patrons.
Implements library policies and procedures as approved by the Select Board and Library Committee.
Prepares monthly activity summaries and annual reports for the Select Board, Library Committee, and Maine State Library.
Maintains library records, statistics, and required documentation.

Fiscal Responsibilities

Assists in preparing the annual operating budget for review by the Library Committee and Select Board.
Manages purchasing, invoices, and basic financial recordkeeping.
Tracks expenditures to ensure adherence to the approved budget.
Coordinates small scale fundraising, donations, and grant opportunities as time allows.

Staff & Volunteer Coordination

Supervises part time staff or volunteers, if applicable.
Provides training, assigns tasks, and ensures adequate coverage during open hours.
Mentors and supports staff development in accordance with municipal policy.

Collections & Technical Services

Selects, acquires, catalogs, and weeds library materials appropriate for community needs.
Oversees circulation functions and maintains the library’s catalog and patron database.
Participates in interlibrary loan services.

Public Services & Programming

Provides direct patron assistance, including reference help, technology support, and reader advisory.
Plans and conducts programs for children, teens, and adults within available hours.
Builds partnerships with schools, civic groups, and community organizations when feasible.

Community Relations

Promotes library services through social media, newsletters, and community outreach.
Represents the library at Select Board meetings or other municipal meetings when requested.
Responds to patron concerns with professionalism and discretion.

Facility & Technology Oversight

Monitors building conditions and reports maintenance needs to the Select Board or Town Manager.
Oversees basic technology operations, including computers, printers, and Wi Fi.
Coordinates minor facility improvements within budget and time constraints.

Governance

Works cooperatively with the Library Committee, providing information and recommendations.
Implements Select Board and Library Committee policies and supports their initiatives.

Other Duties

Performs additional tasks as assigned to support municipal operations and community services.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated leadership and management experience, including the ability to supervise, mentor, and develop staff.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to excellent customer service and community engagement.
Experience with budgeting, financial management, and fundraising.
Experience with programming and collection development.
Knowledge of library operations, policies, and best practices.
Understanding of intellectual freedom, patron privacy, and library ethics.
Ability to build partnerships with schools, community organizations, and local government.
Experience using data to evaluate services and make informed decisions.
Adaptability and willingness to lead organizational change.
Grant writing and resource development experience (preferred).
Technology proficiency and understanding of emerging library services.
Commitment to professional development and lifelong learning.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferred; MLIS/MLS desirable but not required for small municipal libraries.
Library experience or administrative experience strongly preferred.
Experience working with the public in a municipal or nonprofit setting is beneficial.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds.
Ability to operate standard office and library equipment.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a public library setting with frequent interaction with patrons.
Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for programs or meetings.
Position is part time at 16 hours per week, with scheduling determined by the Select Board and Library Committee.

Wage Range

$16.00 to $22.00 per hour, depending on experience, education, and qualifications.

Pay: $16.00 - $22.00 per hour
