Location: Statewide Hawaiʻi (Hybrid)
Employment Type: Full-Time, Salaried

Position Summary
The Controller serves as a senior accounting leader responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of all accounting operations. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller oversees day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger management, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, monthly close, internal controls, and financial reporting. This role ensures accurate accounting across the organization’s diverse operations, including grants, lending activities, real estate development, rent-to-own programs, brokerage operations, and revolving capital funds.

The Controller plays a critical role in maintaining strong financial systems, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and grant requirements, coordinating annual audits, and producing timely and reliable financial information to support organizational decision-making. Working closely with the Director of Finance and operational teams, the Controller helps ensure strong fiscal stewardship and organizational accountability.

Reporting Structure

Reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
Supervises accounting staff and contractors as assigned.
Works in close partnership with the Director of Finance to align accounting execution with financial planning and organizational priorities.
Collaborates regularly with operational and program teams to ensure financial compliance and documentation.

Core Responsibilities

Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, journal entries, and monthly close.
Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial reporting across all organizational entities, programs, and funding sources.
Lead implementation and monitoring of internal controls and accounting policies to safeguard organizational assets and ensure compliance.
Manage grant allocations within accounting systems, including fund coding, expense tracking, and financial documentation accuracy.
Oversee accounting related to property acquisitions, rehabilitation expenditures, development costs, rent-to-own programs, and real estate transactions.
Oversee accounting systems and financial tracking for loan pools, revolving capital, private lending activity, and other financing programs.
Support implementation and maintenance of accounting systems related to brokerage operations and other earned-income activities.
Ensure accurate collection, review, and retention of supporting financial documentation, including timesheets and grant-related backup materials.
Oversee day-to-day financial transactions and maintain integrity of accounting records and supporting schedules.
Coordinate annual audits, financial reviews, tax filings, and audit preparation activities.
Prepare recurring financial statements, reconciliations, and compliance reports for leadership and funders.
Supervise accounting staff and contracted bookkeeping support to ensure consistency, accuracy, and timeliness of financial operations.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
CPA preferred
5–8+ years of accounting leadership experience
Strong nonprofit accounting experience preferred
Experience with real estate accounting preferred
Experience with lending or capital fund accounting preferred

Compensation and Benefits

Pay Range: $70,000-$110,000
Paid Time Off: Available after six months of employment.
