Job Description – Deputy Sheriff
Chase County Sheriff’s Office

Position Type: Full-time, Non-exempt
Overtime: Paid

Salary:

Starting Pay: $21/hour ($45,000 to $60,000/year with overtime)
Pay may vary based on prior experience, as determined by the Sheriff.
Open to both certified and non-certified applicants.
KP&F retirement.

Undergo a background screening
For non-certified applicants: Complete a psychological evaluation
Pass a drug and alcohol test

Residency Requirement:

Applicants must live within Chase County, KS, or be located within a reasonable amount of response time to the county line.

Job Summary:

Deputies will support all operational activities within the Chase County Sheriff’s Office, including service of court processes, criminal and traffic law enforcement, and other duties as assigned by the Sheriff to enhance public safety.

Primary Duties:

Law Enforcement Duties:
Enforce federal and state laws, as well as Chase County resolutions.
Arrest or issue citations to individuals violating laws.
Investigate complaints and incidents such as motor vehicle accidents.
Collect and document evidence found at crime scenes.
Appear in court to provide testimony.
Documentation:
Prepare and submit reports and documentation accurately, legibly, and on time.
Public Relations:
Address citizen concerns and complaints professionally and compassionately.
Training & Mentoring:
Share knowledge and skills with other officers, either informally or in formal training sessions.
Policy Enforcement:
Report violations of County or Sheriff’s Office policies and investigate as directed.
Professional Development:
Take every opportunity to enhance skills through training and self-study.
Regular Attendance:
Consistently show up for work as scheduled.

Intermittent Duties:

Training:
Complete 40 hours of approved training annually.
Financial Handling:
Occasionally handle large sums of cash and make independent purchases for vehicle maintenance and other expenses.
Public Interaction:
Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills with the public and other employees.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
Ability to work long hours in an automobile, exposed to various weather conditions.
Respond to high-risk situations and physical exertion.
Shift Work & Callouts:
Must work shifts, be available for callouts, and respond to emergencies with short notice.
Health and Safety:
Ability to work in high-risk situations involving potential life-threatening conditions.
Physical Exertion:
Complete short bursts of intense physical activity as required.
Vision and Hearing:
Must have sufficient visual and hearing capabilities to perform job duties, including operating office equipment, interacting with the public, and using communication tools.

Basic Requirements:

Qualifications:
Must have the confidence of the Sheriff to be appointed as a Deputy Sheriff.
Must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license.
High school diploma or GED required.
Language Skills:
Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently. Knowledge of a second language is desirable.
Screening and Testing:
Must successfully complete the County employment application, pass exams including a drug screen, psychological evaluation, background check, and polygraph.
Certification:
Must be eligible to obtain full-time law enforcement certification.
Criminal History:
Must not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor crime involving domestic violence or crimes that question the applicant’s integrity.
