Position Summary
The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Specialist develops and implements environmentally-safe and effective pest control strategies focusing on the least toxic methods like biological, cultural, and mechanical controls, alongside targeted chemical applications. The IPM scouts, monitors, keeps detailed records, and is responsible for equipment maintenance, training cultivation team members, and ensuring compliance with cannabis testing regulations.
Detailed record keeping and strict adherence to the company’s operating procedures and compliance with the state regulations are essential for this position. Your expertise will help support healthy harvests and indoor environments.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
The key responsibilities of the Integrated Pest Management Specialist include:
- Regularly scout and inspect plants, growing medium, and environment to identify pests and diseases.
- Monitor plants for any signs of growing issues or problems; treatment for disease or infestation.
- Develop an IPM strategy and plans that use a combination of biological, physical, cultural, and chemical controls.
- MIx and apply pesticides, fungicides, and other agents, according to labeling, as needed.
- Maintain accurate and complete logs of scouting data, treatments, inventory, and compliance.
- Mix, fertilize and provide nutrients to the plants according to cultivation protocols set forth by the Director.
- Perform systematic cleaning and sanitizing of the equipment.
- Ensure the appropriate information is accurate and listed clearly in accordance with the state regulations and company standard operating procedures.
- Carefully follow directions as provided by the manufacturer and Director.
- Willingness to continue to learn best practices of medical marijuana cultivation with a strong interest in prevention, horticulture, agriculture and greenhouse operating systems.
- Perform any other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility.
Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
Required:
- Minimum of 2 years of IPM experience in the cannabis or agriculture industries.
- Advanced knowledge of relevant state and federal pesticide laws, regulations, and restrictions of use for the cannabis industry.
- Must have a Kentucky commercial pesticide license 1A
- Ability to record data (written or electronically).
- Ability to operate specialized equipment.
- Extremely dependable and trustworthy.
- Excellent observation and analytical skills.
- Excellent mathematical skills, able to measure and convert ratios.
- Able to read labels and follow instructions.
- Able to follow verbal and written instructions.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of the cannabis industry and state regulations.
Physical Requirements:
The IPM Specialist is required to stand for prolonged periods of time, moving about frequently in a confined space. This position also requires bending, stooping, climbing, crouching and kneeling, as needed, to inspect and care for the plants. The IPM Specialist must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds frequently; and may be required to occasionally safely lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds.
The IPM Specialist performs work in a warehouse-like environment with artificial lighting and ventilation, where there is a potential for mold, Carbon dioxide (CO2), and/or ozone exposure.
PPE in the form of respiratory protection may be recommended in certain parts of the cultivation.
Other potential environmental hazards include, exposure to corrosive chemicals; flammable/combustible liquids; electricity; and excessive noise. Working conditions include, working at heights; working in confined spaces; wet walking/working surfaces, and use of machines and hand tools.
Schedule
The schedule for this position varies and is based on operational needs. The cultivation operates (365 days a year), 24-hours per day. IPM Specialists are typically scheduled 8-9 hour shifts, 5 days per week, and provide coverage to best support their team and facility. The Specialists schedule may require extended hours, both day and afternoon shifts, weekends and holidays.
This position is required to report to their assigned location, in-person.
Travel
Infrequent travel to locations within the state may be required.
