Industrial Controls Apprentice

Durand-Wayland, Inc.

Build the Machines That Power America's Produce Industry

Durand-Wayland has been designing and building automated fruit and vegetable packing equipment for over 90 years. Our equipment is installed throughout North America and incorporates modern PLC controls, servo systems, robotics, machine vision, VFDs, and industrial automation.

We're looking for an Industrial Controls Apprentice to join our electrical panel shop. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with their hands, solving technical problems, and wants to build a long-term career in industrial automation.

No previous industrial controls experience is required. We are looking for someone with mechanical and electrical aptitude, a willingness to learn, and pride in producing quality work.

What You'll Learn

As an apprentice, you'll work alongside experienced technicians building custom control panels and electrical systems used on industrial machinery. Your training will include:

Reading electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
Mounting electrical components inside control panels
Wiring industrial control panels
Installing PLCs, HMIs, relays, contactors, motor starters, VFDs, power supplies, safety relays, and other control devices
Routing, terminating, labeling, and testing wiring
Using electrical test equipment including multimeters
Learning UL508A and industrial wiring standards
Assisting with machine wiring and electrical assembly
Performing quality inspections before equipment ships to customers
Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area

As your skills develop, you'll have opportunities to assist with machine startup, troubleshooting, and field service.

What We're Looking For

High school diploma or GED
Technical school or vocational training is a plus, but not required
Basic understanding of hand and power tools
Mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
Ability to read a tape measure and follow detailed instructions
Willingness to learn electrical theory and industrial controls
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Dependable attendance and positive attitude
Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in any of the following is helpful but not required:

Electrical assembly
Manufacturing
Industrial maintenance
Automotive or diesel repair
HVAC
Robotics
Mechatronics
Electrical technology
PLCs or industrial automation
