Summary
Responsible for operating the machining capabilities of the shop, including basic maintenance of equipment, machines and tools in a manner to achieve optimal safety, efficiency, quality, reliability, staff morale and teamwork by performing the duties listed in the following section.
This is a manual labor, physically intensive position. All employees of Pump Group Incorporated must agree to perform work out of town or at night, on the weekends and on holidays with short notice and for an extended period as needed. Must be willing to work overtime as needed; overtime is not guaranteed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following list includes essential duties and responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned.Perform all activities in accordance with all policies, principles, and procedures established by Department, Division and Pump Group Inc. Management and Board of Directors.
Operate manual machining equipment including but not limited to engine lathes, radial arm drill and related equipment to machine parts within close tolerances (0.001”).
Read and interpret blueprints, schematics and mechanical drawings.
Create solutions to mechanical problems using interpretation and physical inspection.
Maintain records of work performed including drawings or instructions on how to recreate machined parts. Document in files and update log book on a daily basis.
Responsible for maintenance of machine shop equipment including manual lathe, vertical mill, radial arm, drill press, other tooling mechanisms and supporting equipment (including company vehicles, forklift, etc) before, during and after shift. This includes ensuring proper lubrication and tooling. Oversee maintenance of equipment’s electrical mechanisms.
Participate with assembling pumps and perform inspections as directed by shop management.
Measure shafts and parts to accurately machine what is required.
Assist with review of assemblies and inspection sheets as directed by shop management.
When moving equipment (i.e. fork lift), observe job site and assist as needed to prevent damage and destruction of equipment or property.
Consistently maintain a keen awareness of situation and surroundings to ensure safety of self and team members, particularly around rotating equipment.
Immediately notify supervisor about injuries to self or crew members.
Take care during operations to leave shop area and equipment in clean, operable condition. Immediately report all maintenance repair issues to shop manager
Use handling tools such as tongs and wrenches.
Store and care for all tools, spare parts, materials and supplies.
Follow all safety regulations, policies, principles and procedures.
Use proper Personal Protective Equipment.
Perform basic housekeeping including but not limited to disposing of garbage and organizing work areas and employee break areas before, during and after shift. This includes keeping the tool box organized.
Must be available by phone and be readily available to report to work as needed at all times.
Performs other duties as assigned, which may include working in another function or department as needed.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
· High School Diploma, GED equivalent or applicable experience.
· 3 years of experience or demonstrated proficiency with technical concepts as a manual machinist.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
· Valid Texas Driver’s License.
· Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
Language Skills
· Ability to speak, write, read and understand English required for basic job function.
· Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical or safety procedures, manuals and standards.
· Ability to document production steps including lists, records and files on parts machined, tools and equipment.
Mathematical Skills
· Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions and decimals in standard and metric units.
· Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations with and without a calculator.
· Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry to practical situations.
· Ability to read a tape measure.
Special Equipment Skills
Ability to develop a working knowledge of basic analytical equipment including:
· Micrometer
· Caliper
Experience operating a forklift and welding machine are preferred.
Reasoning Ability
· Strong problem solving ability, which includes the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
· Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
· Ability to work from blueprints, rough sketches and/or verbal instructions.
Other Skills and Abilities
· Strong organizational skills
· Mechanical inclinations including proficiency with hand and power tools
· Ability to record specific jobs and parts machined
· Ability to machine parts to close tolerance of 0.001”
· Ability to machine parts using hand-written instructions or marked up drawing(s) along with blue-printed drawing(s)
· Ability to draw and/or sketch in detail parts for future or repeated machining
· Minimal ability to design or reverse engineer parts
· Ability to interpret oral instructions
· Working knowledge of the set-up and operation of manual engine lathe and knee-type mills
· Working knowledge of various alloys including but not limited to stainless steel, cast, bronze
· Working knowledge of basic electrical concepts
· Willingness and ability to perform routine maintenance on machine shop equipment/lathes
· Familiarity with threading of internal and external parts, including left-hand and right-hand threads
· Must own machinist tools including but not limited to micrometers and vernier calipers
Physical Demands
· Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
· Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
· Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds assisted.
· Ability to distinguish fine details, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to distinguish color and ability to adjust focus required.
· Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to distinguish alterations in mechanical processes.
· This position requires full use of arms and back, and is comprised of repetitive motions.
· Stamina is required as employees may work physically demanding shifts of up to or more than 10 hours per shift.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving and rotating mechanical parts at eye level or overhead which can cause precarious situations; toxic or caustic chemicals including aerosols; risk of electrical shock and vibration; mud; grease; diesel fuel; wet and/or humid conditions; extreme heat/cold; direct sunlight; and other outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles such as metal shavings and dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
