We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Automation Technician to join our team. The Automation Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing automated manufacturing equipment and control systems. This position supports PLCs, HMIs, robotics, drives, sensors, electrical controls, and related equipment under the direction of the Controls Engineer. The Automation Technician works with Engineering, Maintenance, and Production to reduce downtime and support safe, reliable, and efficient operations. Advanced technical experience is preferred; however, candidates with intermediate-level experience and the ability to grow into the position may be considered.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Automation Equipment Support:
- Troubleshoot and repair automated equipment, electrical controls, sensors, drives, robotics, and related systems.
- Assist with diagnosing PLC, HMI, equipment communication, and control-system issues.
- Respond to equipment failures and production interruptions in a safe and timely manner.
- Work with the Controls Engineer, Maintenance, and Production to identify equipment problems and complete repairs.
- Escalate complex programming, design, or recurring equipment concerns to the Controls Engineer.
- Verify equipment operates safely and properly before returning it to production.
Installation, Maintenance, and Programming Support:
- Assist with installing, wiring, testing, starting up, and modifying automated equipment and control systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on automation and electrical-control components.
- Replace and configure sensors, switches, motors, drives, relays, and other control components.
- Assist with basic PLC, HMI, robotics, drive, and equipment-configuration changes as directed by the Controls Engineer.
- Test machine sequences, alarms, interlocks, operating functions, and safety devices.
- Maintain approved backups of equipment programs, configurations, and settings.
- Identify damaged, worn, outdated, or unreliable components and communicate replacement needs.
Safety and Documentation:
- Follow company lockout/tagout procedures and applicable electrical-safety practices.
- Ensure repairs and equipment modifications do not bypass or reduce required safety protections.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
- Document repairs, equipment changes, replacement parts, and recurring concerns.
- Maintain organized equipment records, drawings, manuals, backups, tools, and work areas.
- Report equipment or electrical conditions that may create a safety concern.
Coordination and Improvement:
- Communicate equipment status, repair needs, and recurring concerns to the Controls Engineer and affected departments.
- Assist with equipment installations, production trials, automation projects, and continuous-improvement activities.
- Provide basic guidance to operators regarding equipment operation, alarms, and approved recovery procedures.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and equipment manufacturers when directed.
- Protect confidential engineering, product, employee, and company information.
Perform additional duties as assigned by Management, provided they can be completed safely and within the scope of the employee’s training and capabilities.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in industrial automation, electrical controls, industrial maintenance, mechatronics, or a related field.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot and repair routine automation and electrical-control issues.
- Familiarity with PLCs, HMIs, robotics, sensors, drives, motors, and related industrial equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment manuals.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, electrical testing equipment, and programming devices.
- Knowledge of industrial networks, equipment communication, and machine-safety systems preferred.
- Strong mechanical, electrical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to follow technical instructions, safety procedures, and established authorization requirements.
- Ability to prioritize equipment repairs and production-support needs.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication with the Controls Engineer and other departments.
- Proficient with computers and Google Workspace applications, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, Gmail, and Google Drive.
- Reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented.
- An associate degree, technical certificate, apprenticeship, or equivalent relevant experience is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, reach, kneel, crouch, climb, and work around manufacturing equipment.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, electrical testing equipment, ladders, and other authorized equipment.
- Ability to work around machinery, electrical equipment, noise, heat, and other manufacturing conditions while wearing required personal protective equipment.
- Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Occasional work outside normal business hours may be required to support urgent equipment issues, installations, or production needs.
