Position Summary
JBMDS is seeking an experienced Survey Field Party Chief or Junior Party Chief to join our team. The successful candidate will set up and operate advanced surveying and subsurface-detection equipment, lead or assist a field crew, maintain accurate field records, perform calculations, and communicate project information to office personnel.
Proficiency with Trimble equipment is required. Candidates must also have working knowledge of Ground Penetrating Radar and experience using MALA GPR equipment and Radiodetection utility-locating equipment.
Candidates will be evaluated based on experience, technical ability, personal initiative, professionalism, and their ability to work independently.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate Trimble GPS/GNSS receivers, Survey Controllers, data collectors, total stations, digital levels, and related surveying equipment
- Operate MALA Ground Penetrating Radar equipment
- Operate Radiodetection utility-locating equipment
- Perform utility locating and subsurface investigations
- Complete fieldwork for DOT topographic design surveys, Right-of-Way mapping, ALTA/NSPS surveys, photo control, LiDAR support, and other surveying projects
- Collect, record, calculate, and verify accurate survey data
- Perform field calculations using calculators, data collectors, and supplied project information
- Maintain clear and complete field notes, daily records, files, photographs, and electronic data
- Apply proper field checks to confirm the accuracy and completeness of collected data
- Manage and transmit field data to the office from remote project locations
- Communicate regularly with the Survey Coordinator, project managers, and company leadership
- Review plans, project requirements, field data, and final drawings as needed
- Lead and provide direction to a two-person or larger survey crew
- Train and mentor junior field staff in survey methods, equipment operation, safety, and instrument care
- Maintain survey and GPR equipment in proper working condition
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, efficiency, cost control, accuracy, and professionalism
- Follow all company and project-specific safety standards and procedures
- Provide professional and courteous service to clients, contractors, property owners, and the public
Required Qualifications
- At least one year of land surveying experience
- Proven experience using Trimble GPS/GNSS equipment and Trimble Survey Controller or comparable Trimble field software
- Trimble proficiency is required
- Working knowledge of Ground Penetrating Radar
- Experience using MALA GPR equipment
- Experience using Radiodetection equipment
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to obtain satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record results and maintain an acceptable driving record
- Ability to perform field tasks and solve problems with a high degree of independence
- Ability to work extended or flexible hours when project requirements demand it
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions
- Ability to lift approximately 50 pounds
- Ability to perform repetitive physical activities, including lifting, bending, walking, and standing for extended periods
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills
- Excellent organizational, time-management, analytical, and attention-to-detail skills
- Proven ability to provide excellent customer service
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience leading or assisting a survey crew
- Experience with Trimble total stations and GNSS receivers
- Experience with terrestrial laser scanners, digital levels, LiDAR, or GIS data collection
- Experience with DOT, Right-of-Way, ALTA/NSPS, utility-locating, or subsurface-investigation projects
- Knowledge of survey equipment maintenance and calibration procedures
