Bookkeeping Specialist (Part-Time, 1099 Contractor)

Granfield Consultants | Lowell, MA (Remote with Occasional In-Person Meetings)

Granfield Consultants is a small business consulting firm based in Lowell, Massachusetts, providing bookkeeping, accounting, and business support services to small businesses. We are seeking a detail-oriented Bookkeeping Specialist to support multiple client accounts as an independent contractor (1099).

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys bookkeeping, takes pride in accuracy, and is comfortable working independently while managing multiple clients, software platforms, and priorities.

Success in this role requires curiosity and sound judgment. We value contractors who recognize when something doesn't look right, ask thoughtful questions, and communicate proactively rather than simply recording transactions without understanding them. Our goal is to understand each client's business, not just record transactions. We value bookkeepers who think critically, ask questions, and take pride in maintaining accurate financial records.

Scope of Work/Key Responsibilities

· Process client Accounts Payable, including entering bills, maintaining vendor records, and preparing payments

· Categorize bank and credit card transactions through bank feeds, complete monthly bank and credit card reconciliations, and review financial activity for accuracy

· Organize and maintain financial documents across multiple cloud storage platforms (Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, SharePoint, OneDrive, iCloud, etc.)

· Communicate professionally with clients, vendors, and team members when needed

· Recognize unusual transactions, unexpected activity, or missing documentation, and document questions before making assumptions.

· Follow established client-specific bookkeeping procedures while maintaining detailed client notes and questions in Microsoft OneNote

· Assist with additional bookkeeping and administrative projects as assigned

Contractor Requirements

· Demonstrated experience with QuickBooks Online

· Experience processing Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable

· Experience with payroll processing or payroll support is a plus

· Experience completing monthly bank and credit card reconciliations

· Strong understanding of bank feed transaction categorization

· Strong analytical skills with the ability to recognize unusual transactions, identify discrepancies, and know when to ask questions.

· Comfortable using Microsoft OneNote to document client-specific procedures, bookkeeping questions, and follow-up items

· Experience working with multiple clients or companies is preferred

· Ability to manage multiple client deadlines while working independently in a remote environment

· Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy

· Excellent organizational, time management, and prioritization skills

· Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and OneNote

· Strong written and verbal communication skills

· Ability to work independently while collaborating with the Owner and other team members

· Positive attitude with a willingness to learn and adapt

· Must have your own reliable, working laptop and dependable internet connection

· Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of all client and company information

· Willingness to sign a Confidentiality, Non-Solicitation, Intellectual Property Ownership, and Technology Use Agreement due to access to sensitive financial information

Engagement Details

· Independent contractor (1099) position

· Part-time with flexible hours

· Primarily remote, with occasional in-person meetings in the Lowell, MA area as needed

· Hours will vary based on client workload, with opportunity for additional work as the company continues to grow

· Potential opportunity to transition to a W-2 employee role in the future based on business needs and performance
