Senior Working Foreman — Residential Construction
Blackstone Builders Big Sky, LLC | Bozeman, MT
Pay: $42.00 – $52.00 per hour (hourly, non-exempt). Overtime paid at time-and-a-half.
Job Type: Full-time, year-round
Reports to: Site Superintendent
Position Summary
Blackstone Builders Big Sky builds high-quality single-family and custom residential homes in Gallatin County, Montana, including custom homes in The Summits.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Working Foreman to work across our active projects in the Bozeman area.
This is a hands-on, bags-on position. You will supervise employees and subcontractors while personally performing skilled carpentry every day. This is not a clipboard job.
This role is not assigned to a single house. You will move between our active jobsites, handling the work that falls between the trades: special projects, punch-list execution, and the transitional phases between subcontractors. That means blocking and backing before the next trade shows up, the miscellaneous carpentry nobody's scope covers, and closing out punch lists so homes deliver clean. This team will also run specialty framing projects ranging from siding to trim work, etc.
That work is where a schedule is won or lost. The person in this seat keeps the subs moving and keeps small problems from becoming callbacks — and we treat it as a senior position, paid accordingly.
Your primary hands-on scope includes window and exterior door installation, siding, exterior trim, interior doors, baseboard, casing, finish carpentry, blocking, hardware, and punch work. You are not expected to regularly perform foundation, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or full rough-framing work — but you must understand those phases well enough to coordinate subcontractors, identify deficiencies, and keep projects moving.
The ideal candidate is a well-rounded residential carpenter who works well without being handed a fixed crew and a fixed site — someone who can walk onto any of our jobs, read the situation, and get to work.
This is year-round employment. We do not lay off through the winter.
Key Responsibilities
Special projects and hands-on carpentry:
- Execute special projects as assigned by the Site Superintendent — detail work, custom scopes, and work we keep in-house rather than subcontract.
- Perform the transitional work between subcontractors: blocking and backing, substrate and layout prep for the following trade, protection of finished work, and the miscellaneous carpentry that falls between scopes.
- Own punch-list execution from first walk through closing — repairs, adjustments, corrections, touch-ups, and verification that items are actually complete.
- Install windows, exterior doors, interior doors, siding, exterior trim, baseboard, casing, blocking, hardware, and finish carpentry.
- Work alongside field employees, providing direction, instruction, and quality control.
Keeping the trades moving:
- Move between active Gallatin County jobsites based on company priorities and the Superintendent's direction.
- Coordinate handoffs between subcontractors — verify predecessor work is complete and correct before the next trade mobilizes.
- Supervise and coordinate company employees, subcontractors, suppliers, and deliveries; assign daily work to field employees and verify it is completed correctly.
- Inspect subcontractor and employee work for quality, completeness, plan compliance, and adherence to company standards.
- Identify field conflicts, missing information, defective work, and potential schedule delays before they become larger problems.
- Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, details, schedules, and scopes of work.
- Coordinate upcoming work with the Site Superintendent and identify labor, material, equipment, and scheduling needs.
- Coordinate material takeoffs, deliveries, staging, storage, and protection; verify delivered materials for quantity, condition, and specification compliance.
- Assist with scheduling inspections and ensure work areas are ready before inspectors arrive.
- Maintain clean, safe, organized, and professional jobsites; enforce company safety policies and immediately address unsafe conditions or behavior.
- Protect completed work, finishes, materials, tools, equipment, and neighboring property.
- Attend field meetings and provide accurate updates on progress, manpower, materials, quality concerns, and upcoming work.
- Maintain company tools and equipment and ensure employees use them properly.
- Perform other reasonable construction and project-support duties as assigned.
Documentation (kept lean — roughly 30 minutes a day):
- Record your own hours daily, along with crew timekeeping.
- Maintain accurate daily logs, progress updates, material records, and photo documentation in Buildertrend.
- All hours worked must be recorded. Overtime is paid at time-and-a-half and coordinated in advance with the Superintendent.
Qualifications
- Minimum 6 years of hands-on residential construction or carpentry experience.
- At least 3 years as a foreman, lead carpenter, crew leader, or similar supervisory position.
- Strong experience with residential siding, window installation, exterior doors, interior doors, trim carpentry, and finish work.
- Demonstrated punch-list and closeout experience — you know how to finish a house, not just build one.
- Working knowledge of residential framing, roofing, concrete, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, insulation, drywall, and other major construction phases.
- Ability to recognize poor workmanship, incomplete work, plan conflicts, and common construction defects.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction details, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules.
- Ability to work productively across several active projects without daily hand-holding — self-directed, organized, and able to prioritize.
- Ability to manage employees and subcontractors while remaining productive in a hands-on field role.
- Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
- Ability to plan work several days ahead and clearly communicate labor and material needs.
- Ability to safely operate standard carpentry tools, ladders, lifts, and construction equipment appropriate to the position.
- Ability to perform physically demanding construction work in changing weather conditions.
- Competence with a smartphone, email, and construction management software.
- Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.
- OSHA 30 certification preferred; required within 90 days of hire (company-paid).
Preferred:
- Experience with high-end custom homes, spec homes, or production residential construction.
- Experience working across multiple active residential projects at once.
- Familiarity with Buildertrend or similar construction management software.
- Bilingual English and Spanish.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
Professional Standards & Requirements
These are conditions of employment, not preferences. Please do not apply unless you meet all of them.
Verifiable references. Professional references are required at the time of application — a minimum of three, including at least two direct supervisors or general contractors you have worked under. All references will be contacted and verified prior to any offer. Applications without references will not be considered.
Your own tools. You must arrive with your own bags and a complete set of hand and power tools appropriate to a foreman-level carpenter, in safe working condition. You will be using them every day, on several different jobsites. We back that investment with an annual tool allowance. Company-provided items are limited to specialty equipment, layout instruments, and consumables. Required PPE is provided; you are expected to own and wear your own work boots.
Professional appearance and conduct. You are the face of Blackstone on site. Work-appropriate, well-maintained clothing and good personal hygiene are expected daily, along with professional conduct in the presence of clients, homeowners, and the public.
Professional communication with clients and partners. You will interact directly with homeowners, ownership, the Site Superintendent, project managers, architects, designers, inspectors, suppliers, and subcontractors. Clear, courteous, and composed communication is required at all times. Disputes with trade partners are resolved through the Superintendent — never in front of a client.
Drug- and alcohol-free workplace. Blackstone maintains a strictly drug- and alcohol-free jobsite. Possession, use, or being under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, or illegal substances while on any Blackstone project, in any company vehicle, or on any client property is grounds for immediate termination. Employment is contingent on compliance with our written substance-abuse policy, including pre-employment, post-incident, and reasonable-suspicion testing as permitted by Montana law.
Reliability and punctuality. Consistent on-time arrival, dependable attendance, and same-day communication on any delay or absence.
Background check. Employment is contingent on satisfactory completion of a background check and motor vehicle record review.
Position Expectations
This position requires the employee to remain actively involved in field production. The Senior Working Foreman should expect to spend a significant portion of each workday performing or directly assisting with construction work, rather than exclusively supervising from a vehicle or office.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Lead by example.
- Maintain a high standard of craftsmanship.
- Hold employees and subcontractors accountable.
- Anticipate upcoming work and material needs.
- Communicate problems promptly.
- Protect the project schedule and completed work.
- Maintain clean and orderly jobsites.
- Treat homeowners, coworkers, subcontractors, and project partners professionally.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to regularly stand, walk, climb ladders, kneel, bend, reach, carry materials, use hand and power tools, and lift construction materials weighing up to approximately 75 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. Frequent work from scaffold and staging at height. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions, year-round, including Montana winters.

If you'd rather stay in your bags and be the best carpenter on the crew, that's a career here too, and we'll pay you like it.
