Overview
The Referral Coordinator plays a crucial role in facilitating patient referrals within a healthcare setting. This position requires strong organizational skills and a thorough understanding of medical records, coding, and insurance verification processes. The ideal candidate will ensure that referrals are processed efficiently while maintaining compliance with HIPAA regulations. This role is essential for supporting patient care and enhancing the overall experience within the medical office environment.

Responsibilities

Manage and coordinate patient referrals to specialists and other healthcare providers.
Verify insurance eligibility and benefits for referred services.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, ensuring compliance with HIPAA standards.
Utilize ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding systems to ensure proper documentation of diagnoses and procedures.
Communicate effectively with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies regarding referral status and requirements.
Assist in the resolution of any issues related to referrals or authorizations.
Collaborate with medical office staff to streamline referral processes and improve patient flow.
Stay informed about changes in managed care policies and procedures that may affect referral processes.

Skills

Proficiency in managing medical records and understanding of coding systems (ICD-9, ICD-10).
Experience working in a medical office setting is preferred.
Strong knowledge of insurance verification processes and managed care systems.
Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail to ensure accurate record keeping.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations, including patients, healthcare providers, and insurance representatives.
Familiarity with HIPAA regulations to maintain patient confidentiality and data security.
Strong problem-solving skills to address issues related to referrals efficiently.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree or medical administrative certificate preferred
Minimum 1-year experience in medical referrals, insurance authorizations, or medical office administration
Knowledge of commercial insurances, Medicare, Medicaid, HMO, PPO, and managed care plans
Experience using electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) and practice management software
Familiarity with medical terminology, CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding is preferred
Must be bilingual- English/Spanish

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work
Frequent telephone communications with patients, providers, and insurance companies
Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations
