Organizational Description:
On the Road Collaborative (On the Road) is a non-profit youth empowerment organization in the Shenandoah Valley. Our mission is to empower middle and high school youth by providing equal access to educational opportunities and hands-on career experiences. Through our unique after-school learning programs, we connect our youth to trusting adult relationships and equitable opportunities, enrich their lives with additional learning opportunities that inspire growth, and empower our youth to realize and fulfill their promise. Our programs are offered for youth in Harrisonburg (Skyline Middle School, Thomas Harrison Middle School, Rocktown High School, and Harrisonburg High School), Waynesboro (Kate Collins Middle School and Waynesboro High School), and Staunton (Shelburne Middle School). We serve more than 400 youth annually.
Program Specialist Position Description:
The Program Specialist assists the Site Coordinator in leading a middle or high school program site and serves as a mentor and positive example for our youth.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Program Planning and Implementation: Work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, especially school-day teachers, Youth Leaders, and volunteers, to ensure high-quality program implementation, continuous improvement, and achievement of goals.
- Program Staff Support: Work closely with the Site Coordinator to support a team of Youth Leaders resulting in a safe, positive, and impactful learning environment for youth. Serve as a substitute Youth Leader as necessary.
- Youth Mentorship, Coaching, and Support: Motivate youth to grow and succeed through effective mentorship and coaching, and assist the Site Coordinator with discipline matters
- Youth Recruitment, Attendance, and Retention: Assist with efforts to recruit and retain youth in the On the Road program, and implement proven and innovative strategies that lead to consistent program attendance.
- Family Outreach and Engagement: Build relationships with youth’s families, regularly communicating with them about topics such as program goals, logistics, youth learning and growth, upcoming events, and ways to get involved.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with all On the Road, local, and state procedures and standards, and the safety of all program youth.
- Operational Logistics & Administration: Manage a variety of operational logistics and administrative responsibilities that may include, but not be limited to: enrollment/attendance, facilities, supplies, grant reporting, and transportation.
Qualifications:
Strong candidates for this position will demonstrate the following characteristics:
- Commitment to the On the Road Collaborative mission, equity, and belief that all youth can learn and achieve at high levels
- Demonstrated ability to engage, lead, and instruct middle and/or high school youth (ages 11-18) individually and in groups
- Leadership experience
- Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including families, volunteers, school faculty, and community partners, and provide an outstanding level of service
- Initiative, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills
- Detail-oriented with organization and time management skills
- Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
- CPR and First Aid Certified (*On the Road will pay if you are not currently certified)
- Proficient using Google Applications
- Valid Driver’s License and provide personal vehicle
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for special programming, such as field trips and Learning Showcase events
Position Details:
The Program Specialist must be available Monday through Friday afternoons, generally between 1:30 and 5:30 p.m.
The hourly pay rate starts at $21/hour. The Program Specialist can expect to typically work between 15-20 hours per week, including program planning and administrative duties.
Positions are available in Harrisonburg, Waynesboro, and Staunton.
