Full Job Description

VOA Northern New England is seeking a detail-oriented Controller to join our dynamic Finance Department. This role offers a hybrid work environment, blending in-office collaboration with the flexibility of remote work.

The Controller is a key leadership role within the finance department, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer. This role is ideal for an ambitious, self-motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced setting and is experienced in handling sensitive information professionally. A background in using NetSuite is highly advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct all aspects of accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and financial reporting.
Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies and procedures with the CFO in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
Prepare and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and recommend corrective actions.
Oversee cash flow management and forecasting in partnership with the CFO, including banking activities, cash management processes, investment accounting, and liquidity monitoring to support operational needs.
Design, implement, monitor, and strengthen internal controls to safeguard organizational assets, mitigate risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and support operational effectiveness.
Oversee grant, contract, and fund accounting activities, including restricted funding compliance and reporting.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, Medicaid, HUD, and other funding source requirements.
Coordinate and support the annual budget process and ongoing forecasting activities with the CFO.
Lead annual financial statement audits, Uniform Guidance audits, and other compliance audits by coordinating schedules, workpapers, responses, and implementation of audit recommendations.
Analyze intercompany transactions and oversee related entity financial activity.
Evaluate and recommend continuous improvement initiatives related to financial systems, reporting tools, accounting processes, automation, and data integrity.
Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, performance management, and professional development for accounting staff.
Review and approve journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations, and financial analyses to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records.
Serve as a financial resource to program leaders regarding budget management and financial performance.
Coordinate the preparation and review of Form 990 and other required regulatory filings for VOA Northern New England and related entities in partnership with the CFO and external tax advisors.
Contribute to other duties as assigned, including organizational initiatives, committees, and strategic projects.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Minimum 7-10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including supervisory experience.
Demonstrated experience building, developing, and leading high-performing accounting teams.
Experience in nonprofit accounting, grant accounting, fund accounting, and governmental reimbursement funding streams preferred.
Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit financial reporting, internal controls, and audit practices.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting applications.
Experience with NetSuite, RealPage, or similar ERP/accounting systems.
Strong analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
Knowledge of Medicaid, HUD, and government-funded programs preferred.
Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, leadership, auditors, funding agencies, and external partners.
