Job Description
The Pulling Unit Operator, reporting to the assigned Field Supervisor, leads a 2-3-person workover rig crew, and is responsible for performing and safely operating well workover components and services. The primary responsibilities include but are not limited to preparation of crew members, inspection, maintenance, and operations of assigned workover rig, in accordance with company procedures and requirements. Additional functions may be specified by the assigned Field Supervisor or other designated operations management. All duties are expected to be performed safely and effectively to maximize the safety of the entire crew while meeting company expectations and being a solution to their projects by OWP’s operating safety and performance standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Operate the rig safely during rig up/down and pulling operations
- Operate the crown and ground saver
- Check brake systems and confirm functionality
- Pull and lay down rods, tubing, casing, and other equipment as needed
- Understands job steps and arranges rods and tubing correctly
- Understand the rig's hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems
- Perform all required equipment inspections-workover rig, fall arrest system, derrick, hoisting and mud pump
- Able to instruct floor and derrick hands in use of all safety equipment
- Able to instruct the floor and derrick hand in use of all rig and pumping equipment
- Operate the power swivel
- Perform Blowout Preventer (BOP) inspection, testing and installation as needed
- Assist HSE, DOT, and all other applicable departments with document completion, collection, and management
- Complete field tickets in a timely manner and turn in to appropriate department for processing
- Troubleshoot maintenance issues; to include performing worn equipment recognition checks and turning in maintenance requests for repair or replacement of equipment as needed
- Accurately perform torque calculations and specs
- Perform JSA/DWP and tail gate meetings as scheduled
- Perform pipe tallying, rigging up and down, nipple up and down of BOP units, and pipe handling
- Responsible for keeping work site, equipment, and tools clean and in good working order
- Perform day to day lubrication and minor adjustments of equipment
- Perform use of Hazard ID programs and means of documenting hazards
- Perform daily inspection and maintenance of equipment
- Perform and oversee energy isolation procedures
- Train and mentors crew members on day to day operations
- Responsible to stop work if conditions are unsafe and report concerns immediately
- Report all incidents as per the standard operating procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- High school diploma, GED, or the equivalent.
- Must have valid state issued driver license with acceptable motor vehicle records (MVR); Class A or B CDL a plus/preferred.
- Required three (3) years of workover rig experience; production experience a plus; minimum two (2) years Rig Operator experience required and at least two (2) years (prefer 3 years) operational and safety experience as a Derrick Hand and Floor Hand required.
- Working knowledge of basic service mechanical functions.
- Ability to lift heavy equipment up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to access the work environment by use of a ladder at heights of 50 ft. or more.
- Long periods of standing, squatting, kneeling, reaching or similar activities may be necessary.
- Able to perform duties with protective equipment, H2S respirator where required; potential hazards include working near or with heavy tools and moving machinery.
- Must be able to travel as job requires.
- Work may be performed in all weather conditions.
- Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and written; English preferred.
- Ability to interact with others in a team environment and work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks at once.
- Basic problem solving and organizational skills.
- Excellent customer service skills, to provide world class value to OWP customers.
- Have dependable form of communication – cell phone preferred.

- Ability for qualified clearance on background checks, pre-employment drug and alcohol and job-relevant screens.
Working Conditions
- Work primarily at job site performing work in outdoor weather conditions with exposure to extreme cold, heat, and noise depending upon project site; and may also include the following:
- dust, fumes, chemicals, and/or other harsh/hazardous solvents or disinfectants
- electrical components, power lines, or other electrical hazards
- rebar, blades, or other sharp objects/tools
- high elevations, trenches, or crawl spaces
- Possible travel locally during the work day between jobsites, although some out-of-area travel may be expected with seldom overnight travel.
- Work irregular hours to include nights and weekends.
