Position Summary
Sulfur Operations Support, Inc. is seeking an experienced Inside Machinist to support machining, fabrication, repair, and equipment-manufacturing activities at our Ocean Springs facility.
This is a shop-based position for a dependable, safety-conscious machinist with hands-on experience operating manual lathes, drill presses, milling machines, saws, grinders, and related machine-shop equipment. The selected candidate will manufacture, modify, repair, and finish precision components used in sulfur-processing equipment, pressure-related fabrication, piping systems, and industrial energy projects.
The ideal candidate can work independently from drawings, sketches, dimensions, samples, and verbal instructions while consistently maintaining required tolerances, surface finishes, and quality standards.
Primary Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual engine lathes, drill presses, vertical mills, band saws, grinders, and other machine-shop equipment.
- Machine components from carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy materials, aluminum, plastics, and other industrial materials.
- Perform turning, facing, boring, drilling, tapping, threading, reaming, grooving, chamfering, counterboring, and related machining operations.
- Machine shafts, bushings, pins, spacers, flanges, rings, threaded components, sealing surfaces, and custom-fabricated parts.
- Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts, speeds, feeds, fixtures, and machining methods for each assignment.
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, machining drawings, blueprints, sketches, bills of material, and dimensional requirements.
- Accurately lay out hole patterns, bolt circles, centerlines, and machining locations.
- Verify dimensions and tolerances using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges, depth gauges, thread gauges, squares, and other precision measuring instruments.
- Inspect completed work for dimensional accuracy, proper fit, thread quality, surface finish, and conformance to drawings.
- Perform machine setups, indicate workpieces, align fixtures, and establish proper tooling before machining.
- Repair or modify existing equipment and components when replacement parts are unavailable or impractical.
- Coordinate with welding, fabrication, engineering, quality control, and production personnel to resolve fit-up or dimensional issues.
- Assist with prototype development, one-off components, and low-volume specialty manufacturing.
- Maintain traceability and identification of materials and machined components when required.
- Complete job travelers, inspection records, material records, and other production documentation.
- Maintain machines, tooling, fixtures, measuring equipment, and work areas in a clean and serviceable condition.
- Perform routine machine maintenance, lubrication, cleaning, and minor troubleshooting.
- Follow company safety procedures, quality requirements, and applicable customer specifications.
- Safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, hoists, and material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.
- Perform additional shop and production duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on machining experience in an industrial machine shop, fabrication facility, manufacturing plant, repair shop, or similar environment.
- Demonstrated experience operating manual lathes and drill presses.
- Experience with manual milling machines and precision measuring instruments.
- Ability to independently set up machines and complete machining operations from start to finish.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and machining symbols.
- Knowledge of common machine-shop calculations, including decimal and fractional dimensions, diameters, radii, bolt circles, tap-drill sizes, speeds, and feeds.
- Understanding of thread types, thread pitches, classes of fit, and internal and external threading.
- Ability to hold close dimensional tolerances and produce consistent, repeatable work.
- Familiarity with machining carbon steel and stainless-steel materials.
- Ability to identify unsafe conditions, damaged tooling, and machine problems.
- Ability to work independently while also supporting a team-based production environment.
- Strong attention to detail, dependability, and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift or handle materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Must have reliable transportation and consistent attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of manual machining experience.
- Experience machining components for pressure vessels, piping systems, valves, pumps, rotating equipment, or oil and gas applications.
- Experience working in an ASME, API, AWS, or other code-controlled fabrication environment.
- Experience with CNC lathes or CNC milling machines.
- Experience using digital readouts, rotary tables, boring heads, indexing equipment, and specialty fixtures.
- Experience machining sealing surfaces, flange faces, O-ring grooves, pipe threads, and pressure-related components.
- Welding, fabrication, mechanical assembly, or industrial maintenance experience.
- Forklift or overhead-crane experience.
- Vocational, technical-school, apprenticeship, or community-college training in machining or manufacturing technology.

Work Environment
This position is performed primarily inside an industrial fabrication and machine-shop environment. The employee may be exposed to machinery, metal chips, cutting fluids, welding and grinding activities, elevated noise levels, moving equipment, and varying shop temperatures.
Required personal protective equipment may include safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe footwear, face shields, and other task-specific PPE.
