Full Job Description

TITLE: Food Services Manager

SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Food Services, the Food Services Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day functions of kitchen operations including leading a team of kitchen staff and ensuring the highest standards of food quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. Responsibilities also include coordinating meal service with other departments and special event coordination.

STATUS: Full-time

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Food Services

DIRECT REPORTS: Food Services Staff

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION:

A. Oversees the preparation of food, ensuring that it is cooked to the appropriate temperature and meets quality standards.

B. Assists with food prep, cooking, and plating as needed.

C. Manages and schedules kitchen staff, ensuring that they are properly trained and that all shifts are covered.

D. Ensures that staff follow all safety and sanitation guidelines.

E. Manages the daily operations of Cabin 28.

F. Orders and maintains an inventory of food, supplies, and equipment, ensuring that everything is stocked and in good condition.

G. Enforces health and safety regulations, maintains cleanliness standards, and oversees proper storage and handling of food to prevent contamination.

H. Fosters effective communication and collaboration with other departments, such as the Conference and Program departments, as well as the special event coordinators, to ensure seamless operations and exceed guest expectations.

I. Proactively address operational challenges and contribute to problem-solving initiatives.

J. Provides training to kitchen staff on food preparation techniques, safety procedures, and new recipes, fostering a productive and skilled team.

K. Interacts with customers and works with front-of-house staff to ensure that all customer complaints or issues are resolved quickly and satisfactorily.

L. Ensures that the kitchen and all equipment are clean and well-maintained.

M. Other duties as assigned*

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

A. Ability to manage kitchen staff while demonstrating strong leadership skills.

B. Ability to demonstrate excellent time management, scheduling, and organizational skills.

C. Ability to manage inventory of food, supplies, and equipment, while adhering to kitchen budget.

D. Ability to demonstrate strong customer service and to quickly and successfully resolve customer complaints.

E. Ability to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

F. Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

G. Ability to demonstrate a strong base of culinary knowledge.

H. Ability to train and develop kitchen staff on best practices regarding food preparation, safety, and sanitation.

I. Proficiency in standard office software platforms including database management and Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.

J. Knowledge of health and safety requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A. At least two (2) years of culinary managerial experience, required.

B. At least four (4) years of general kitchen experience, required.

C. Food Manager’s Certification, required.

D. Proficiency in both English and Spanish, preferred.

E. Minimum four-year college degree in related field, preferred.

F. Additional education, such as master’s degree or professional certifications, preferred.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Physical Demands: The essential functions of the position may require frequent long periods of standing and sitting; repetitive use of both hands and finger dexterity in both hands, handle or feel, grasp and hold and cut; see, talk, he; reach with hands and arms; and walk upstairs and inclines.

The employee is occasionally required to twist, stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities frequently required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to walk on unstable grounds and occasionally up to a mile within and around the camp/conference center.

Mental Demands: The essential functions of the position require the ability to read and write complex material, perform simple and complex math calculations, and the ability to perform simple and complex tasks; perform clerical functions, compile and analyze information; coordinate activities, supervise and instruct others; follow instructions, influence others, meet time requirements, memorization, problem solving through use of independent judgment and decision-making skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside seasonal weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work will entail the use of computer equipment. The employee works alone, with others, around others, with verbal and face-to-face contact.
