Position Summary
The Director of Sales & Marketing is responsible for driving total hotel revenue through strategic leadership of sales, catering, marketing, and revenue initiatives. This role is accountable for achieving budgeted goals across room revenue, group business, banquet/catering, and overall market performance.
This leader develops and executes comprehensive sales and marketing strategies, manages key client relationships, and partners closely with the General Manager, Revenue Management, and Ownership to optimize business mix and profitability. The position directly oversees a sales team consisting of a Catering Sales Manager, Sales Manager, Sales Coordinator, and Reservations Coordinator, providing day-to-day leadership, direction, and development to ensure overall team success.
Key Responsibilities
Revenue Strategy & Performance
- Drive total revenue performance across rooms, catering, banquet, and group segments
- Develop and execute sales and marketing strategies aligned with budget and forecast goals
- Analyze market trends, demand, and competitive data to adjust pricing and positioning
- Partner with Revenue Management to optimize rate, availability, and inventory strategies
- Monitor sales pace, production, and profitability; adjust strategies as needed
Sales Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop the sales team to achieve individual and team revenue goals
- Set clear performance expectations and monitor productivity (calls, leads, conversions)
- Participate in key client negotiations to maximize revenue and profitability
- Oversee group business, ensuring proper market mix and function space utilization
- Maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, and brand stakeholders
Marketing Strategy
- Develop and execute the annual marketing plan and budget
- Oversee digital marketing efforts, including website performance and SEO optimization
- Manage internal and external marketing partners to ensure campaign execution
- Track and report on campaign performance and ROI to leadership and ownership
- Identify opportunities to increase market penetration and brand visibility
Operations & Reporting
- Prepare and present forecasts, budgets, and sales reports
- Monitor key performance metrics including pace, segmentation, and profitability
- Ensure proper use of Marriott systems and sales tools
- Participate in daily stand-ups, weekly sales meetings, and leadership meetings
- Maintain accurate sales records, pipelines, and documentation
People Leadership & Culture
- Train and develop sales team members
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and high-performing work environment
- Ensure accountability across the team by addressing performance concerns in a timely and professional manner, including documenting performance when necessary and following established company guidelines
- Demonstrate the ability to have direct and constructive conversations, providing clear feedback while maintaining respect and professionalism
- Support employee engagement and satisfaction initiatives
Guest & Community Engagement
- Represent the hotel at trade shows, industry events, community and networking functions, while developing strategies to maximize lead generation, follow-up, and conversion into booked business
- Host and attend client events, site tours, and sales activations
- Ensure a high level of guest satisfaction for all booked business
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Sales, Marketing, or related field preferred
Experience:
- 4–6 years of hotel sales and marketing experience
- Minimum 2 years in a senior sales leadership role
- Experience in a full-service hotel environment strongly preferred
Skills & Knowledge:
- Strong leadership, communication, and negotiation skills
- Proven ability to drive revenue and achieve sales targets
- Knowledge of hotel sales, marketing, and revenue management principles
- Experience with Marriott systems and sales platforms preferred
- Previous trade show and industry event experience preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Experience with PMS systems (e.g., Lightspeed) preferred
- Experience with CRM systems (e.g., CITY) preferred
- Experience with ADP or similar HRIS/timekeeping systems, including responsibility for approving timecards, meal periods, and managing PTO for hourly team members, strongly preferred
Work Environment
- Professional business attire required
- Primarily office-based with frequent interaction throughout the hotel
- Ability to sit and work on a computer for extended periods
- Occasional standing, walking, and light lifting (up to 15 lbs)
