Full Job Description

Position Overview:

Reporting to the President, the Director of Finance will have oversight of all accounting, budgeting, and reporting activities. The position requires responsibility in preparing monthly financial statements to the board finance committee, reports at the full board meetings, all data entry, check writing and distribution of checks. The Director of Finance is considered a member of the leadership team, and will support department heads in preparing, and monitoring annual budgets.

The Director of Finance will lead day-to-day finance operations of a $4 million budget, which includes functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, certain board restricted assets, and grant administration as needed. The position requires coordination with the HR director in payroll administration and benefits processing. The school currently utilizes a PEO relationship to support payroll and benefit functions. The position also requires the professional support expected in relationship to the annual audit review, and the preparation of the 990.

The Director of Finance will ensure that the school has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and will work with program leaders and their staff to explore how the finance function can support the larger mission of the school.

Responsibilities:

· Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.

· Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue (including tuition), costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.

· Coordinate all audit activity.

· Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Bethesda Academy’s financial health and status.

· Lead Bethesda Academy in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain and correct variances as appropriate.

· Support the President in engaging the board’s audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.

Formulate effective procedures and processes with tuition billing and collections and oversees communication with parents in regards to financial issues.

· Oversee all financial, project/program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate and foundation grants as needed or required.

· Manage organizational cash flow by working in partnership with school department heads; continuously collaborate with the President to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations in real time.

· Manage and track the performance of certain board restricted assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.

Qualifications:

This is an extraordinary opportunity for a mature leader with five to seven years of accounting and finance experience, who can build upon prior experiences of gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders. She/he will ideally have experience in a complex nonprofit that has multiple programs.

Other qualifications include:

· Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to the school’s mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the President, Board and staff the responsibility for comprehensive financial planning.

· Minimum of a BA degree in accounting with 7-10 years of qualified experience; Masters or CPA is a plus.

· Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll and accounting for investments.

· A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is a plus.

· Technology savvy with experience in selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of QuickBooks is a plus.

· Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills, which allows for strategic data interpretation verses simple reporting.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board, and outside partners.

· Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
