Description of Work
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Production Assistant. The Production Assistant works within the Digital Media team to support the creation, organization, and maintenance of the museum’s video content, live programs, and digital exhibit systems. The position provides essential digital production and maintenance support, equipment tracking, and weekend operations coverage.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist on video shoots by setting up gear, organizing equipment, and supporting lead producers.
- Log footage, pull selects, and organize media for editors.
- Maintain backup drives and organize digital storage systems for archiving and documentation.
- Support live programs, theater presentations, and livestream setups by preparing equipment, monitoring feeds, and assisting with technical operations.
- Create, manage, and update the Digital Media exhibit maintenance log, including documenting issues, resolutions, and patterns.
- Perform routine exhibit checks and assist with maintenance tasks, following established procedures.
- Track digital media requests and help manage project workflows.

Recruitment Range: $32,287 - $40,912

- Basic knowledge and experience with video production practices, software, and equipment setup for film shoots.
- Ability to organize and manage technical inventories, track equipment checkouts, and maintain accurate logs or documentation systems.
- Ability to follow established procedures for routine digital exhibit checks, document technical issues clearly, and escalate problems appropriately to senior staff.
Experience supporting live events, theater operations, or AV setups, including managing simple audio/visual checks or assisting with livestream preparation.

- Must be able to work some nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must be able to lift and/or move digital media equipment up to 50lbs. as part of the regular working duties.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in media production, photography or commercial art from an appropriately accredited institution

Division Description
The State’s museum devoted to science and nature, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in central Raleigh is the largest institution of its kind in the Southeastern United States and, with over a million visitors a year, the state’s most visited museum. Its 300,000 square foot downtown campus is augmented by Prairie Ridge Ecostation and satellite facilities in Whiteville, Greenville, and Contentnea Creek. Together, they provide a variety of curriculum-focused classes onsite, offsite, outdoors, and online for pre-kindergarten through graduate students across the state.
As a museum of nature, we integrate the dual concepts of illumination and inspiration with the work we do and the many stories we tell. Across three vibrant floors of laboratories and exhibitions, our Nature Research Center provides an unparalleled opportunity to see science in action by watching museum researchers studying the natural world in real time. In the Nature Exploration Center, exhibits and live animal displays reveal North Carolina’s rich natural habitats, wildlife, and geology from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.
Our programs and activities impact people in all the state’s one hundred counties. We develop a variety of exhibits to share with institutions across North Carolina and support other museums by administering the North Carolina Science Museums Grant Program. We also engage the state’s students indirectly by providing professional development training for teachers, research opportunities for classrooms, and outdoor learning environments on school campuses.
Section/Unit Description:
The Exhibits and Digital Media Section is responsible for the development, design, and maintenance of all interpretive media and exhibit experiences across two buildings and seven floors of the Museum’s Downtown Raleigh complex, as well as three branch locations statewide. This innovative section translates scientific research into accessible, memorable stories that inspire curiosity and deepen public understanding of the natural world.
The Digital Media Unit is a six-person team that develops and maintains digital and interactive experiences in the Museum. It also delivers AV support, live streaming, and video production for museum programs. The unit runs a professional recording and editing studio with 4K capabilities and supports research, education, events, and promotional media needs. Team expertise includes audio engineering, animation, 3D modeling, and management of three advanced digital theaters.
