- SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Operating Room Surgical Technologist is a member of the surgical team who works with the Surgeon, Anesthesiologist and Registered Nurse, delivering direct patient care. The Operating Room Surgical Technologist, under the guidance of the Registered Nurse, is responsible for the care and safety of all patients under his/her care. The Operating Room Surgical Technologist acts as the primary scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. The Operating Room Surgical Technologist is responsible for anticipating the Surgeon’s needs, understanding the surgical procedure and maintaining a sterile field. The Operating Room Surgical Technologist is also responsible for the care and processing of instruments and equipment in the Surgery Center. This Operating Room Surgical Technologist is also primarily responsible for assisting in ordering supplies, maintaining the stock room, cleaning OR suites and assisting with outdates and other duties as assigned.
- QUALIFICATIONS: A High school graduate or equivalent, and has completed one of the following: A program at a school of surgical technology.
- Training in the military services of the United States.
- Surgical Technician Certification is preferred.
- BLS Certified.
- Membership and involvement in a professional organization, desirable.
- JOB RELATIONSHIPS:Responsible to the Charge Nurse and/or the Director of Nursing.
- Works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Works cooperatively with the other members of the Surgery Center staff, the medical staff, vendors, patients and their families/visitors.
- PHYSICAL ACTIVITES and REQUIREMENTS:Good physical and mental health is essential. The job involves extensive lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to fifty (50) pounds while administering patient care; stooping, kneeling and/or crouching; standing and walking for five (5) or more hours per day; reaching, grasping, and handling and/or feeling five (5) or more hours per day.
- Visual Acuity must be able to distinguish between all ranges of color to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration, infection and to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.
- Audio acuity to correctly distinguish various body sounds, i.e. respirators, heart sounds, bowel sounds and to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment which would indicate dangerous or improper operation.
- Must be able to read, speak and write English fluently.
- Surgical Tech must be able to lift and, move patients using good body mechanics.
- Must speak clearly and distinctly.
- Must maintain a neat and clean appearance.
- RESPONSIBILITIES:The duties of the Surgical Technologist include but are not limited to:
- Assembles and checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Follows surgeon’s preference cards, helps to keep preference cards updated.
- Sterilizes necessary instruments.
- Assists with cost containment by only opening items that are certain to be used.
- Checks outdates on instruments and supplies.
- Performs the scrubbing function during surgical procedures. Follows recommended practices for scrubbing and donning gown and gloves and follows aseptic technique at all times.
- Sets up back table, mayo stand, instruments and supplies.
- Counts needles and sponges, as appropriate, with circulator prior to the start of surgery and before incision closure.
- Gowns and gloves surgeons, assistants, etc.
- Helps in draping sterile field.
- Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure.
- Prepares sterile dressings, assists with cast application.
- Demonstrates understanding of aseptic technique and maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
- Assists with moving the patient(s).
- Assists other members of the team with terminal clean-up of room in readiness for the next case.
- Uses proper technique for the transport of soiled instruments and supplies to the work area for decontamination.
- When free and when cases are finished: Help with setting up other rooms for cases, set-up room for the next day’s schedule, help in central, check cases for the next day, clean equipment & operating room supply areas, and other tasks as needed for the center’s operations.
- Assists in maintenance, care and cleanliness of equipment, instruments and supplies.
- Maintains the sterile and non-sterile supplies, and instruments in an orderly fashion for Surgery Center.
- Assures the proper handling of sterile items.
- Maintains the records of sterilization for each sterilizer.
- Understands the operation and handling of the equipment in Central Supply.
- Prepares and processes contaminated instruments, equipment and supplies for sterilization in a manner appropriate for item.
- Orders supplies for the Surgery Center, as needed.
- Assists in maintaining a safe environment for the patients.
- Observes cost containment practices with effective utilization of time and materials.
- Shares and performs assigned duties as necessary for the Surgery Center operations (i.e., ordering supplies, equipment checks,).
- Demonstrate the spirit, mission and values of the Center through words, actions and implement them into the departmental processes, programs, and the working environment. Applies the principle and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day to day activities of the position.
- Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care, personnel strategic issues. Adheres to Confidentiality Policy and HIPAA.
- Displays honesty and mutual respect when communicating with peers, physicians, vendors, patients, visitors, etc.
- Follow through on problems that may compromise effective job performance by using appropriate chain of command.
- Participates within going education and competency verification activities as needed in the Center.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
- Attends staff meetings and in-services.
- Follows medical/legal policies governing the Surgery Center at all times.
- ** Must be strong in these specialties: Orthopedics (Sports, Joints, ACL, Scopes) Ophthalmology (Cataracts, Glaucoma) Urology, ENT, Plastic, GI, Pain Management, Gynecology.
Maintains and up-grades standards of performance and education.
