Position Summary
Main Street Homes is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our Accounting team. This role is responsible for applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to analyze, maintain, and report on the financial activities of the company's real estate investments, including residential land, commercial land, rental properties, and multifamily developments.
The ideal candidate enjoys analyzing financial data, improving processes, collaborating across departments, and contributing to strategic business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Development & Construction Cost Accounting
- Maintain and monitor land development, lot, and community cost records.
- Ensure costs are accurately coded, allocated, and capitalized in accordance with company policies.
- Analyze project costs and investigate variances from budget and forecast.
- Support monthly review of land development and construction project performance.
- Track and reconcile development expenditures, commitments, and cost transfers.
- Assist with maintenance of community profitability and lot cost reporting.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare recurring reports related to community profitability, gross margins, development spending, and operational performance.
- Analyze actual results against budgets, forecasts, and historical trends.
- Provide financial analysis and decision support to Operations, Land Development, Accounting, and Executive Leadership.
- Assist in preparation of monthly management reporting packages.
- Respond to ad hoc reporting and analysis requests from the Controller and CFO.
Accounting & Month-End Close
- Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of development-related balance sheet and income statement accounts.
- Support internal and external audit requests as needed.
- Maintain compliance with company accounting policies and procedures.
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve reporting, controls, and accounting processes.
- Partner with operational teams to improve financial visibility and cost management.
- Assist with implementation and enhancement of accounting and reporting tools.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field
- 1–3+ years of accounting, finance, or related business experience
- Strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas and functions
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Preferred Qualifications
- Accounting experience within the real estate, homebuilding, or construction industry
- Experience with Microsoft SQL and/or Power BI
- Experience working with development budgets, land accounting, or investment reporting

Work Environment
