Full Job Description

Performs difficult skilled technical work assisting in the planning and design of electrical distribution systems, preparing work orders and construction drawings, updating system records and maps, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Assistant Director of Electric Utility.

Essential Functions

Assists with the design and engineering of electric distribution systems; calculates loads, lays out new electric utilities, and redesigns existing electric utility facilities.
Coordinates the work of electric line crews on the electric system; prepares and submits work orders.
Performs field surveying and staking work; assists with utility location; collects and manages GPS data; updates system map in real time with as-built data from the electric line crews.
Meets with engineers, contractors, and customers to assess their energy needs related to installation or upgrades to the electric service.
Assists with the review of site plans and proposed developments.
Maintains and operates the City’s traffic signal systems.

Special Requirements

Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Education & Experience

Associates/Technical degree with coursework in civil or electrical engineering, or related field and moderate experience in electric utility design work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the methods, principles, and practices of electrical transmission and distribution system design and operation; general knowledge of regulations governing the location and placement of electrical facilities and equipment; general knowledge of materials and methods used in construction of electrical systems; general knowledge of ordinances and policies pertaining to electric utilities; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; ability to perform design work of electrical utility systems and facilities; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with engineers, consultants, officials, business owners, customers, and the general public.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
