Full Job Description

JOB OVERVIEW: The Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) provides direct peer-to-peer support services to individuals who have substance abuse or co-occurring disorders. As an advocate for patients, the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist will be responsible for providing essential expertise and consultation to the entire multidisciplinary treatment team to promote a culture in which each individual's treatment needs and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists individuals in developing problem-solving skills to respond to challenging experiences in their recovery.
Models effective coping and self-help strategies and techniques to individuals or groups of patients to overcome personal fears, anxieties, urges, and triggers.
Assists/supports individuals in daily decision making, resolution of minor problems, and crisis intervention as necessary.
Assists individuals in identifying their personal goals and objectives for recovery and sobriety.
Assists other staff in a collaborative process of identifying programs and environments that are conducive to recovery.
Assists individuals in creating their personal recovery plans.
Meets with individuals to provide advice and support in accordance with treatment plans.
Facilitates peer support groups and recovery-oriented activities.
Maintains confidentiality and ethical standards in all interactions.
Participates in continuous training and supervision to enhance professional development.
Documents individuals' progress and outcomes to support ongoing care planning.
Assists individuals in obtaining and utilizing clinic-based and community-based services that support individual recovery needs.
Assists individuals by identifying community resources and encouraging participation to engage in healthy social activities, employment opportunities, or provide other assistance as needed.
Observes behaviors and evidence of general well-being and discusses observations with the inmates.
Assists individuals in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy.
Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Certification
- Completion of the online Missouri Credentialing Board Certified Peer Support Specialist Exam and must complete annual continuing education to maintain certification during employment.
Experience
- 2 years of experience working with Adult MH/SA disorders, or equivalent experience.
- Experience in corrections medicine, emergency department, or psychiatric facility setting is desired; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Requires passing a criminal background check and Department of Social Services/Child Protective Services background check.
- Ability to complete a State-approved training program and pass a standardized examination.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be able to multitask, prioritize, be dependable and reliable.
Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check.
