Electrical Lead – Utility-Scale Solar
Location: Alabama
Employment Type: Full-Time
Industry: Renewable Energy / Utility-Scale Solar
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Lead to support the delivery of a major utility-scale solar project in the United States.
This is a key site-based position responsible for overseeing the installation, inspection, testing and commissioning of the project's electrical systems. You will work closely with the EPC contractor, Owner's Engineer and project management team to ensure that all electrical works are delivered safely, to specification and in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
The successful candidate will bring strong hands-on experience across utility-scale PV electrical construction, including DC systems, inverters, medium-voltage collection systems and HV substation equipment.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced solar electrical professional looking to take a lead role on a large-scale renewable energy project.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Construction
- Lead and oversee electrical installation activities across the utility-scale solar project.
- Inspect installation of DC cabling, combiner boxes, trackers and inverter systems.
- Oversee installation of the medium-voltage (MV) collection system.
- Monitor installation of MV transformers, switchgear, cable systems and associated equipment.
- Oversee electrical works associated with the project's HV substation.
- Review installation against approved drawings, specifications and manufacturer requirements.
- Identify construction issues and work with EPC teams to develop appropriate corrective actions.
- Ensure electrical installation activities are completed in accordance with project schedules.
Testing & Commissioning
- Witness and oversee electrical testing and commissioning activities.
- Coordinate testing of DC, inverter, MV and HV systems.
- Review test procedures, inspection documentation and commissioning records.
- Support energization activities and ensure appropriate procedures are followed.
- Coordinate with EPC commissioning teams, OEM representatives and the Owner's Engineer.
- Identify and resolve electrical issues during commissioning and energization.
- Support punch-list completion and final turnover of electrical systems.
Quality & Compliance
- Monitor EPC electrical installation quality and compliance.
- Ensure work is performed in accordance with NEC, IEEE, NESC, applicable local codes and OEM requirements.
- Review electrical inspection reports and quality documentation.
- Track and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) relating to electrical works.
- Review corrective actions and verify completion.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, testing and outstanding issues.
- Participate in quality audits, site inspections and project meetings.
Project Coordination
- Work closely with the EPC Electrical Manager, Electrical Superintendents and construction teams.
- Coordinate with the Owner's Engineer and project management team.
- Attend daily and weekly construction meetings as required.
- Provide regular updates on electrical construction progress, quality issues and project risks.
- Escalate technical or construction issues where appropriate.
- Assist with schedule reviews and identification of potential electrical construction delays.
- Support the project team through mechanical completion, commissioning and commercial operation.
Required Experience
- 7+ years of electrical construction experience within utility-scale solar.
- Strong understanding of utility-scale PV electrical systems.
- Proven experience with MV collection systems.
- Strong knowledge of substation electrical equipment and systems.
- Experience overseeing EPC electrical contractors.
- Experience with electrical testing and commissioning.
- Strong understanding of electrical construction quality and QA/QC processes.
- Working knowledge of NEC and IEEE standards.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams and technical specifications.
- Strong understanding of electrical safety and site procedures.
- Excellent communication and contractor management skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced project environment.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working on 100MW+ utility-scale solar projects.
- Previous Owner's Engineer, Owner's Representative or EPC experience.
- Experience with HV substations and transmission interconnection facilities.
- Experience supporting grid interconnection and energization.
- Experience working with inverter OEMs and MV equipment manufacturers.
- Previous commissioning or energization experience.
- Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) is advantageous.
- Electrical engineering, construction management or related technical qualification is preferred.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will be a technically strong electrical professional who is comfortable operating in a site-based leadership role.
You should be confident challenging EPC contractors when required, identifying electrical quality issues, reviewing technical documentation and ensuring that work is completed correctly before systems progress to testing and commissioning.
This is not a purely desk-based engineering position. We are looking for someone who understands how utility-scale solar projects are actually built, tested and energized in the field.
