Hughes Main Library, 25 Heritage Green Place, Greenville, South Carolina 29601

Schedule

Up to 20 hours per week. During the initial training period (estimated 2-4 weeks), the work schedule will be determined in consultation with the supervisor. Training must be completed Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to ensure trainers are available to provide instruction. Following successful completion of the initial training period, flexible scheduling may be available during Hughes Main Library operating hours, subject to supervisory approval.

Salary

$19.93 per hour. Position works up to 20 hours per week

Function

Reporting to the Information Services Manager, this position:

Assists with digitization of historical and archival materials using a variety of professional scanning equipment.
Creates master file copies and derivatives, and performs basic image editing on digitized materials.
Prepares and edits descriptive metadata spreadsheets.
Performs work under general supervision, in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgment in the application of policies and established procedures.

Minimum Training & Experience

Required:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience using Microsoft Office software programs, Google Apps, various Internet browsers, Adobe Photoshop or alternative image editing software, and email.
Experience reading and interpreting historical handwriting and cursive.
Experience using scanners and/or photographic equipment.
Other combinations of experience, education and training that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted as long as the applicant has completed:
- a minimum of 60 college credit hours through an accredited college university, or
- the Library Support Staff Certification through the American Library Association

Preferred:

Experience working on digitization projects or other digital library related work.
Experience using a digital asset management (DAM) system.
Experience working in a public library, museum, or archives.
Experience working in a local history and genealogy department.

Prepares, scans, and edits images for digitization projects. (E)
Performs quality control checks on digital images to ensure adherence to digitization guidelines. (E)
Assists with rights evaluation on items selected for digitization based on established workflows. (E)
Creates, manages, and updates metadata for items in multiple formats. (E)
Assists with converting at-risk formats such as magnetic tape (VHS and audiocassette) into digital files using in-house equipment. (E)
Assists the Digitization Librarian and Digital Preservation Librarian in uploading content into the Library System’s digital asset management (DAM) system. (E)
May perform initial processing of historical collections and archival materials.
Creates digital file names using appropriate file naming schemas. (E)
Assists with creating resource records or finding aids for archival materials in the Library System’s archival collection management system.
Reads and interprets historical handwriting and creates transcriptions. (E)
Cleans, dusts, and maintains scanning equipment, computers, and workstations. (E)
Reports scanning equipment or hardware needing repair to the supervisor. (E)
Retrieves and refiles Library System materials carefully and accurately. (E)
Conducts research using Library System resources and online databases. (E)
Assists in the development of content for Library System web pages and publications. (E)
Prepares, processes, and/or transmits, correspondence, acquisitions request forms, time sheets, reference statistics sheets, cataloging corrections forms, reports, etc. (E)
Attends library association meetings, training programs, workshops, and conferences as appropriate.
Ensures safe work methods are followed to prevent injury. (E)
Performs other related duties as required, including those of any staff member in the unit.

Required Knowledge, Skills/Abilities & Characteristics

(Testing of computer skills may be part of the interview process for this position.)

Knowledge:

Knowledge of basic computer, mouse, and keyboard use.
Knowledge of Windows operating system, MS Office, Google Apps, Adobe Photoshop or alternative imaging software, various Internet browsers and email.
Knowledge of digital file formats, resolution standards (DPI/PPI), and basic digital file organization.
Knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic.
Preferred: Knowledge of CONTENTdm, AM Quartex, or similar digital asset management systems.
Preferred: Knowledge of ArchivesSpace or similar collection management systems.
Preferred: Knowledge of DSLR cameras and image scanning equipment.
Preferred: Knowledge of contemporary metadata standards such as Dublin Core.
Preferred: Knowledge of the history of Greenville County and of South Carolina.

Skills/Abilities:

Ability to safely handle fragile, brittle archival materials.
Ability to maintain a high level of concentration and accuracy while performing routine, repetitive tasks.
Ability to follow complex, multi-step technical instructions and file-naming conventions consistently.
Ability to follow established copyright and rights management guidelines.
Ability to work under project deadlines and manage time effectively to meet production goals.
Ability to read and decipher historic handwriting and cursive.
Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment and establish and maintain effective working relationships with Library System staff.
Ability to be detail-oriented and recognize and correct errors.
Ability to learn and enforce the Library System’s policies, procedures, and regulations.
Ability to operate and care for digital scanning equipment, computers, and their peripherals, e.g. DSLR cameras, printers, etc.
Ability to learn the Library System’s integrated system software that manages Library System processes.
Ability to effectively use computer equipment, Windows operating system, MS Office, various Internet browsers, email and the Library System’s website; including the online catalog and databases.
Ability to learn emerging technologies and moderately complex computer applications.
Ability to communicate concepts, general information, and task-oriented information in oral, written, and electronic forms.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and use good judgment and discretion in carrying out duties and responsibilities.
Touch typing skills.
