Summary
The Machinist II is responsible for independently setting up and operating manual, automatic, and CNC machine tools to manufacture precision components according to engineering specifications and quality standards. This role interprets complex technical drawings, performs precision measurements, troubleshoots machining issues, and supports production efficiency while maintaining safe work practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Include the following; other duties may be assigned:
- Read and interpret complex blueprints, sketches, specifications, and CAD files to determine machining requirements and produce precision components.
- Independently set up, operate, and disassemble manual, automatic, and CNC machine tools to manufacture parts within specified tolerances.
- Program and adjust machining parameters including cutting paths, feed rates, speeds, and tolerances to ensure precision and efficiency.
- Prepare machines for operation by performing test runs, making adjustments, and completing minor machine repairs as needed during production.
- Align, secure, and adjust cutting tools, fixtures, and workpieces to ensure proper machine operation and part accuracy.
- Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, and materials required to complete assigned job orders.
- Prepare raw materials to required specifications using equipment such as power band saws, table saws, and radial arm saws.
- Compute and verify dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of workpieces using precision measuring instruments.
- Monitor machine operations, adjusting feeds, speeds, and machine controls as necessary to maintain dimensional accuracy and production efficiency.
- Perform finishing operations such as filing, grinding, deburring, and fitting components to ensure proper assembly and quality.
- Troubleshoot machining issues and make process adjustments to resolve production or quality concerns.
- Maintain machine equipment and ensure machines operate safely and effectively throughout production cycles.
- Collaborate with engineering, production control, and supervisors to address machining challenges and improve manufacturing processes.
- Assist in training and providing guidance to entry-level machinists.
- Follow all safety regulations and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

- Works independently on most machining tasks
- Responsible for machine setups and adjustments
- Provides guidance to junior machinists

- Advanced Blueprint Interpretation - Ability to accurately read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, CAD files, and specifications to determine machining requirements and tolerances.
- Machine Setup & Operation - Proficient in independently setting up, operating, and adjusting manual, automatic, and CNC machine tools to produce precision components.
- Precision Measurement & Quality Control - Skilled in using advanced measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges, and calipers to verify dimensional accuracy and ensure quality standards are met.
- Machining Process Knowledge - Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling selection, feeds and speeds, cutting paths, and material characteristics.
- Troubleshooting & Problem Solving - Ability to diagnose machining issues, identify root causes, and make necessary machine or process adjustments to maintain production efficiency and part accuracy.
- Technical Collaboration & Mentoring - Ability to effectively communicate with engineering, supervisors, and production teams while providing guidance and support to entry-level machinists.

Preferred, but not required:
- Education/Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and machining specifications.
- Experience setting up and operating manual, automatic, and CNC machine tools.
- Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and other inspection tools.
- Working knowledge of machining processes, tooling selection, feeds and speeds, and material characteristics.
- Ability to troubleshoot machine issues and make necessary adjustments to maintain part quality and production efficiency.

Work Environment
This position operates in a dynamic manufacturing environment with frequent interaction between production teams, engineering, and cross-functional departments. The role involves regular presence on the production floor, where noise levels can be high and temperatures may vary. Employees must be comfortable working around machinery, materials, and overhead lifting equipment. Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends may occasionally be required to meet production goals.
