Full Job Description

Position Title: Production Manager

Reports to: General Manager

Direct Reports: All Production supervisors, shipping manager, maintenance manager, corrugator area manager, production assistant

Status: Exempt

Position Summary: The production manager is responsible for all personnel and production in the plant.

Essential Job Functions: Working cooperatively with all Company personnel, including Customer Service, production supervisors and any assistant, the PM will help devise, implement and then monitor daily, on-going Production management strategies at NEWW. The PM will understandably concentrate on those production issues and concerns that are both important and urgent in nature (Class I). The PM will also focus and make progress on implementation of longer-term, more complicated plant and production issues. Such issues may not be urgent in nature but will be understood as being important enough to eventually require attention (Class II). Class II issues may fall within the general categories of improved plant production, improved product quality, reduced plant waste or plant cost savings. It is required that the PM make substantial, documented improvements in selected Class II areas.
The PM should become proficient in all production supervisory and scheduling functions at NEWW. The PM should have in place the arrangements, training and personnel necessary to back-up and fill in for all NEWW supervisory positions where an incumbent is absent. The Production Manager will personally provide any needed back-up where the circumstances dictate.
NEWW manages production at NEWW in part through the use of the Harry Rhode Management Computer System (HRMS). The PM must learn to use the HRMS System to monitor and evaluate floor production. The HRMS system must be continually monitored to assure accuracy of the input data. Where the HRMS system data is being corrupted due to inaccurate input from the production floor, the PM should take action to remediate the situation, using disciplinary action as needed.
The NEWW Production Manager is to be a common presence on the production floor monitoring all equipment, personnel activities and material movement (WIP). Effectively dealing with quality and/or equipment problems on the floor through vendor and OEM communications must be a top priority. Where floor supervisors have no time for such problems, the focus of the PM is often needed to gain successful resolutions.
The PM will work closely with the Quality Department on all matters related to the production of quality products which must meet or exceed customer expectations. It is the responsibility of the PM to push a quality presence on the floor through his/her supervisors.
The PM will be expected to work with HR in the assessment of personnel needs and in personnel evaluations that accompany the hiring process.

The Production Manager will be expected to become thoroughly familiar with the use and interpretation of the Union Labor Agreement (LA). Read the LA at every opportunity. The Production Manager should always attend meetings with the Labor Group and delve into the intricacies of this complicated relationship. The PM must understand the Company-Union work environment and work with the Union President as needed to resolve issues. The PM should work closely with the NEWW Human Resources Manager and other supervisors in any dealings with the Union. Minutes of all Union meetings will be recorded, stored and filed on paper

The Production Manager will daily manage all production personnel, working through appropriate supervisors.

The PM will lean toward the use of normal and routine channels of communication. The PM will avoid ancillary and conflicting verbal directives and instead work through supervisors, where possible, to buoy supervisor confidence and status as they struggle with supervisory issues.
New, first-time, production items should receive the particular attention of Production Management. The goal here should be to produce new items precisely and without significant waste the first time they are run. To achieve success, running first time, new items, the PM should work closely with NEWW's Pre-Press Manager, the Quality Department and interface at all levels with the Sales Force and Customer Service Representatives. Work to ensure the procedures and data flowing to Production from Customer Service are accurate to the finest degree possible.

And any other duties assigned by General Manager or designee.

Education and/or Experience: NEWW's Production Manager should possess at least 5 years of experience in the workplace and in managerial experience.

Completion of a four-year College degree is a suggested requirement.

Demonstrated analytical skills and communication skills, verbally and in written English, are prerequisites for any candidate who has hopes to function successfully as NEWW's Production Manager.

Language Skills: The production manager must be a superior communicator in all situations.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to analyze production data and make inferences.

Technical Skills: The NEWW Production Manager should possess the following attributes and characteristics:

Good time management skills.

Superior multi-tasking skills.

Good control over his or her emotions under adverse circumstances.

Effective personal relation skills, which include that of being an active listener, and skill at conflict resolution.

Professional appearance, demeanor and objectivity.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the PM if he or she is to successfully perform the functions of the job.

The PM will regularly be required to:

Talk, hear, sit, stand, walk extensively and lift up to 35 lbs.

Good vision, including color vision, is needed to accomplish the job.
