Company Information

Merrill Steel is a large-scale structural steel and heavy plate fabricator with the ability to apply sophisticated paint and fireproofing coatings. All manufacturing is completed in the US and is sourced out of four production facilities: Schofield, WI, Springfield, MO, & Camanche, IA and new in 2025 to Osceola, AR. Merrill Steel is made up of over 600 non-union hardworking employees.

Merrill Steel is a family-owned business that was founded in 1962 by Roger H. Hinner.  The company has grown and prospered over the years, serving the nation’s structural steel needs for companies such as Tesla, Ford, General Motors, Nissan, Volvo, and ThyssenKrupp.  The company has also fabricated steel assemblies for large stadiums, arenas and structures such as Lambeau Field, American Family Stadium (Miller Park), the Resch Center, Camp Randall Stadium, Soldier Field, U.S. Bank Stadium, Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center, Orlando International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Tyson Events Center, Kansas City Wizards Stadium, Churchill Downs, Mercedes Benz Stadium, Citizens Bank Park, Detroit Events Center, and the University of Notre Dame.

Position Summary

The MRO (Maintenance, Repair, & Operations) Buyer role is a key part of the overall production operations. As a member of the Purchasing team, the MRO Buyer position is responsible for all purchases pertaining to shop functionality, equipment, and consumables for all three Merrill Steel facilities. Other duties may involve material sourcing, data entry, cost comparisons, handling claims or material returns, as well as monitoring inventory levels.

Value-Based Decision Maker – Purchasing decisions often have many variables at play, such as price, quality, delivery time, payment terms, etc. This person must be able to weigh all the variables and make the best overall decision.
Dependable – This person must follow through with commitments, have excellent attendance, and work the necessary hours to meet internal customer needs.
Adaptive to Changes and Problem Solving – Change is normal in most of our jobs, so being able to pivot on the fly and problem solve as needed will be required.
Mathematics and Analytical Skills – This role requires strong math skills and a natural ability to add, subtract, and multiply costs. As a result, this person must have the abilities and skill to perform those tasks accurately and efficiently.
Detail Oriented – This person must be naturally attentive to detail, perform quality work, and notice small discrepancies or errors in others work.
Productive – This person must have the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
Strong Communication – This person will work with several different departments over three different states and will need to be able to clearly communicate in person, over the phone, in emails, or through video conference calls (Teams/Zoom).

Key Responsibilities

Placing orders for production and maintenance operations from approved vendors.
Manage inventory for various products and handle all claims, credits, or material returns.
Receive materials and record material certifications.
Negotiate pricing and dispute pricing discrepancies.
Data entry and E-filing.
Cross train with other team members for backup purposes.
Be willing to do whatever it takes within company guidelines to meet department goals and deadlines.

Desired Experience/Education

High school diploma or GED required, technical degree would be preferred, but not required.
1-5 years of experience in one of the following careers is preferred : Purchasing, Accounting, Inside Sales, or Shipping & Receiving.
Familiar with Excel and Outlook.
Experience with Accounting, Maintenance, Repair, & Operations (MRO), and Inventory software.
Ability to think outside the box to improve team procedures.
