Full Job Description

The mortgage underwriter is responsible for reviewing, evaluating and approving or denying residential mortgage loan applications with a focus on Non-QM loans. The Mortgage Underwriter should be able to create, update and negotiate Non-QM loan program underwriting guideline with aggregators and portfolio investors from the standpoint of overall credit risk.

Key Responsibilities:

Evaluate residential mortgage loan applications, including borrower credit reports, income documentation, assets, and property appraisals, to determine the borrower's ability to repay the loan.
Stay current on federal, state, and local mortgage regulations, including RESPA, TILA, ECOA, and HMDA, and ensure all loans comply with these regulations.
Ensure conditions are satisfied in a timely manner. Underwrite more complex loan files, including those that involve higher risk, non-traditional income, or unusual property types, with a high degree of independence and accuracy.
Conduct audits or second reviews of loans when necessary. Provide support to borrowers and team members by addressing questions or concerns related to the underwriting process..

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or a related field preferred.
At least 3 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, with significant experience in residential Non-QM loan underwriting.
Demonstrated experience working with automated underwriting systems (e.g., DU, LP, etc.) and manual underwriting processes.

Skills:

Experience with Encompass as LOS.
Be able to handle a pipeline of 50-100 loans with max turn time of 48 hours.
Be able to commute to office within one hour.
Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
