Job Summary
This is custodial work at the lead worker level in the general cleaning and housekeeping of buildings, facilities, furniture, and equipment including routine care and maintenance of grounds. The worker operates all custodial equipment and participates in all custodial activities and general maintenance of assigned buildings, facilities, equipment and grounds. Work requires knowledge of and the ability to apply the techniques, methods and procedures used in custodial work, School Board policies and procedures applicable to the custodial section and assigned employees and the ability to work independently. Schedules, oversees, monitors, trains, and guides assigned employees; and inspects and reviews the work to include providing input to immediate supervisors regarding employee job performance and recommending realignment of work schedules, as necessary, to adjust for absenteeism. The School Maintenance Technician Lead must be present during the work shift of the main work forces for assigned work location(s) and may be assigned to either the day or night shift. Contact with administrators, teachers, other employees and the general public require basic courtesy, tact and skills in understanding and influencing people to obtain desired results. The work is performed under general supervision, and the worker is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to supervisor or designee’s approval. This class lies directly above School Custodial Technician II.

1. Schedules, oversees, monitors, trains, and guides assigned employees; inspects and reviews their work to include providing input to immediate supervisor regarding employee job performance and recommending realignment of work schedules, as necessary, to adjust for absenteeism.

2. Conducts routine inspections of custodial and safety equipment in accordance with HAZCOM/HAZMAT procedures.

3. Establishes and maintains custodial and employee records and reports.

4. Orders, establishes and maintains inventory records, and appropriately stores custodial supplies and equipment.

5. Operates and performs routine maintenance of powered cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbing, buffing, polishing machines and carpet cleaning machines in accordance with established procedures and/or manufacturer’s operating manual.

6. Performs general custodial duties such as stripping, scrubbing, mopping, sweeping, waxing, and polishing hard floor surfaces; cleaning carpeted surfaces; dusting and polishing furniture or fixtures; sanitizing toilets, washrooms and fixtures; and washing windows, woodwork and blinds.

7. Empty waste baskets and other waste receptacles; collect and dispose of trash in outside receptacles provided.

8. Performs general cleaning and maintenance of grounds and exterior walkways to include the use of power blowers and pressure washers.

9. Police and maintain grounds by picking up trash, trimming hedges, raking leaves, removing weeds and otherwise maintaining grounds and playground areas

10. Monitors heating/air conditioning and electrical systems of assigned work location(s) for routine operational problems.

11. Makes minor repairs to buildings, facilities, furniture and equipment such as replacing burned out light bulbs, replacing light switch covers and electrical outlet covers, unstopping clogged drains, repairing and/or replacing minor cleaning equipment parts, and assembling, installing or adjusting desks, pencil sharpeners, doorknobs and associated fixtures and any other light maintenance using hand tools.

12. Routine biomedical cleaning to include (but not limited to) surface sanitization against communicable diseases, minor to moderate blood and bodily fluid spills, cleaning required following pest infestation, cleanup of sanitary sewer spills, etc.

13. Availability to work during emergencies to support City Shelters during normal scheduled hours and overtime as needed.

14. Operate and maintain robotic apparatus

15. Ensure building security by turning off lights, locking doors and coding the alarm system.

16. Assists in setting up bleachers, chairs, tables, or other materials/equipment needed for school special events/meetings.

17. Reviews and know their role in the school’s lockdown and emergency protocols and procedures.

18. Reports suspicious activity or persons to the school’s resource officer or guardian.

19. May also perform a variety of miscellaneous duties (i.e., touch up painting, delivering equipment to teachers or staff, setting up and arranging furniture or special equipment, picking up paper or debris, and assisting with basic pest control tasks as needed).

Probationary Period: One (1) year
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements: Ability to read, write, and speak English. High school diploma or equivalent. Must have at least five (5) years responsible custodial experience which includes the use of various machines and materials used in custodial work for stripping/scrubbing, shampooing, vacuuming, and lawn care, one year of which must have been in a lead worker capacity responsible for scheduling, overseeing, monitoring, training, guiding, inspecting and reviewing the work of assigned custodial employees.
Promotional Requirements: All permanent employees who have served in the classification of School Custodial Technician II for two (2) years may apply.
Note: Any permanent employee serving in the classification of Lead Custodian may apply and if hired will receive a 5% increase to their base hourly rate. These employees will be required to complete the assigned one (1) year probationary period.
Certifications & Licenses: A valid Florida driver’s license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in the class. Must provide own transportation to outlying areas where assigned.
