Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Pharmacist is responsible for providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients receiving specialty medications for obesity and weight management. This role focuses on optimizing medication therapy, improving clinical outcomes, ensuring medication safety, and collaborating with healthcare providers to support individualized treatment plans. The pharmacist serves as a clinical resource for patients and providers while managing specialty pharmacy operations, prior authorizations, medication access, and ongoing therapy monitoring.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Review and verify prescriptions for specialty weight management medications to ensure accuracy, appropriateness, and compliance with federal and state regulations.
Provide comprehensive patient counseling on medication administration, expected outcomes, potential side effects, storage requirements, and adherence strategies.
Educate patients on injectable therapies, including proper injection techniques, dose titration schedules, and safe disposal of sharps.
Monitor patients for medication effectiveness, tolerability, adverse events, and therapeutic outcomes through scheduled follow-up consultations.
Collaborate with prescribers, nurses, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals to optimize individualized treatment plans.
Facilitate prior authorizations, insurance approvals, appeals, and patient assistance programs to improve medication access.
Evaluate potential drug interactions, contraindications, and clinical appropriateness before dispensing specialty medications.
Maintain accurate patient documentation in accordance with pharmacy standards and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate refill management and adherence programs to promote continuity of care and minimize therapy interruptions.
Monitor inventory and ensure proper storage, handling, and dispensing of specialty medications requiring refrigeration or other special conditions.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, medication safety programs, and specialty pharmacy accreditation standards.
Stay current on clinical guidelines, emerging therapies, and evidence-based practices related to obesity treatment and metabolic health.
Provide education and support regarding lifestyle modifications, including nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral strategies as part of comprehensive weight management.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA, state pharmacy laws, federal regulations, and specialty pharmacy policies and procedures.

Common Medications Managed

The Specialty Pharmacist may manage therapies including, but not limited to:

GLP-1 receptor agonists
Dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonists
Other FDA-approved anti-obesity medications
Adjunctive therapies used in comprehensive weight management programs

Required Qualifications

Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited college of pharmacy.
Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in the applicable state(s).
Experience in specialty pharmacy, ambulatory care, endocrinology, obesity medicine, or chronic disease management preferred.
Strong knowledge of specialty medication workflows, insurance requirements, and prior authorization processes.
Excellent communication, patient education, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
Proficiency with pharmacy management systems and electronic health records (EHRs).

Preferred Qualifications

Board certification (e.g., BCPS, BCACP) preferred.
Experience with specialty pharmacy accreditation standards (URAC and/or ACHC).
Familiarity with manufacturer patient support programs and specialty medication distribution models.
Experience managing GLP-1 and other obesity pharmacotherapy regimens.
