Ad Astra Eye is seeking an experienced individual to join our ophthalmology practice. We are looking for someone who can think critically, is adept at communication and problem-solving. Experience as an ophthalmic technician and or as a medical scribe strongly preferred. Some tasks include surgery-related work.
We are a growing one-physician ophthalmology practice located in Lawrence, KS, with satellite locations in Lenexa and Mission. We also offer an office based surgery for cataract surgery. We would like someone who can work well with our team and can assist us in strengthening our clinical and surgery functions.

Clinic Hours: M-F 8:00 - 4:30; Typical Office Surgery Day 7:00- 3:30
Salary: $19 to $26/hour (Rate will depend on experience and/or certifications)

Position Title: Ophthalmic Technician
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Summary of Responsibilities:
Responsible for assisting Ophthalmologist, who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and disorders. The technician's duties include promptly and professionally performing clinical workups and diagnostic testing, setting up and maintaining ophthalmic equipment, and being responsible for daily patient care and flow.
Additional duties include a role in Office-Based Surgery as Surgical (Scrub) Technician, or other roles as needed by the practice.
Report to: Clinical MD; Assistant Manager; Practice Administrator
Essential Functions of Ophthalmic Technician:
· Perform standard ophthalmic clinical workup with accuracy. Document patient histories, perform lensometry, manifest refraction, pupil assessment, EOM, CVF, slit lamp operation, Goldmann tonometry, narrow angle assessment/screening for safe dilation
· Scribe for the doctor. Document the exam and the plan in the chart. Medically assist the doctor throughout the examination
· Perform role of Surgical (Scrub) Technician in Office-Based Surgery, demonstrating sterile technique and knowledge of surgical instruments
· Perform diagnostic testing including autorefraction, Zeiss OCT, IOL Master 700, IOL Master 500, Humphrey Visual Field, Alcon Verion Imaging
· Assist in minor office procedures including RxSight LDD treatments, YAG Capsulotomies, SLT’s, I&D’s and excisions
· Demonstrate a working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular meds
· Communicate with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, and symptoms
· Understand and follow the procedure for surgical and procedural informed consent
· Triage calls
· Maintain and clean equipment and surgical instruments
· Maintain, clean, and stock the examination rooms
· Return phone calls to patients, pharmacies, and surgery center staff
· Conduct cataract surgery and YAG Capsulotomy counseling
· Basic knowledge of contact lenses
· Regularly utilize both the Electronic Health Record system (Optivate/EyeMD) and the Practice Management system (AdvancedMD)
· Obtain prior authorizations for surgeries and prescription medications
· Maintain patient confidentiality
Other Functions:
· Provide clerical and administrative assistance to support clinical and surgical operations
· Work in satellite office locations (Lenexa and Mission, KS)
Minimum Education:
· High school diploma or GED
· Certified Ophthalmic Assistant
Minimum Background Requirements:
· Familiarity with ophthalmology office daily functions and equipment
· Previous experience or training in this or a similar position
· Knowledge of medical instrumentation and its proper care and usage
· Willing to cross-train for other responsibilities within the office
Minimum Demonstrated Skills:
· Team player, ability to assist the ophthalmologist and collaborate with coworkers and supervisors
· Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
· Self-starter, ability to take initiative
· Effective time management
· Data entry
· Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
· Able to handle a minimum of 3 workups per hour
· Understand and use proper sterile technique, universal precautions, and eye drop technique and sterility.
· Demonstrate flexibility in job assignments
Physical Demands:
· Keyboarding, Windows, Microsoft Office proficiency
· Must be able to stand for long periods of time
· Must be able to write and type
· Must be able to hold arms at shoulder height
· Must be able to communicate by phone
· Must have manual dexterity to work with ophthalmic equipment
· Must be able to carry a laptop (approximately 3-5 lb) during the 8-hour work hour work shift
· Must be able to lift and or move up to 25 pounds frequently, and in some settings, up to 50 pounds occasionally, including but not limited to assisting in patient transfers
