SALARY: $23.00 - $24.00/hour
HOURS: Part Time .75 FTE - 30 Hours Weekly
LOCATION: Lakewood Branch - 10402 Kline St SW, Lakewood WA 98499 - Includes travel to Tacoma and Lakewood sites
ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound (BGCSPS) is a non-profit organization that CHANGES LIVES through quality programs and guidance in a safe, affordable, and fun environment. BGCSPS’s mission is to inspire all young people, especially those who need us most, empowering them to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible members of their community. We have been providing a safe, fun, and positive environment at our sites with trained and dedicated professional staff for more than 80 years.
Members are involved in age-appropriate activities based upon our three priority outcomes of Academic Success, Character Development, and Healthy Lifestyles.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Behavior Support Specialist (BSS) works with BGCSPS members, families, and staff to enhance mental health wellness and social-emotional learning for all our members while working from a Trauma-Informed Lens. BSS will work with parents who have children with challenging behaviors to increase positive behaviors at home and at the Clubs. BSS works with staff to help members manage challenging behaviors and develop member success plans. BSS will work with members individually and in group settings to achieve goals around mental health wellness and positive behaviors. The BSS will work to enhance family competence, including parenting skills, child growth and development, safety, improving communication and family functioning. BSS assists with staff and community trainings as needed.
FUNCTION/TASKS
● Provide culturally responsive support to families in order to build family strengths and capacities.
● Provide advocacy services for families, referring families and children to appropriate community resources.
● Work collaboratively with BGCSPS staff in joint problem solving that utilizes the unique strengths of all team members while helping to create a trauma-informed club environment.
● Develop success plans for members with input from parents and BGCSPS staff to address the needs or concerns for the BGCSPS Member.
● Provide basic social-emotional learning tools for members with individual check in’s
● Organize and lead short-term psycho-educational groups for members and other youth served, addressing topics such as substance use/abuse, sexuality, self-esteem, peer leadership, and general health and fitness.
● Support Social-Emotional Learning programs at each Club site, including supporting calming corners.
● Implement mental health promotion curriculum both individually and in group settings.
● Develop and implement Family Engagement nights working with Club staff and DFS.
● Evaluate success of programs.
● Track metrics of programming as assigned.
● Attend and participate in BGCSPS and community trainings.
● Practice and respect member/family/staff confidentiality.
● Perform other duties as assigned. Maintain close daily contact with club staff, club members, supervisor and volunteers to receive/provide information, discuss issues, and understand guidelines/instructions. At times BSS may step into fill staffing shortages to ensure safety of members.
QUALIFICATIONS
● Minimum of 21 years of age.
● Willingness to learn about the communities in which you will be working including learning about community resources: referring families to community resources when appropriate.
● Ability to foster cooperation and trust with the families served and among team members using a strength-based approach.
● Ability to collaborate with team members in the development of behavior expectations and behavior plans for BGCSPS members.
● An extensive understanding of mental health issues, current laws and regulations.
● Ability to support parents to build healthy parent/child relationships and enhance family competence including: parenting skills, child growth and development, safety and communication skills.
● Ability to creatively and effectively solve problems.
● Ability to work as a team and independently.
● Ability to manage behavioral challenges while remaining empathetic, patient and flexible.
● Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
● Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
● Ability to use a computer to send email, enter data, create reports and documents.
● Driving
○ Must have a reliable personal vehicle for business related travel.
○ Valid WA State driver’s license with acceptable 3 year MVR - driving record.
○ Verification of Tier 2 Insurance standards.
○ Willingness to travel within a designated region for community partnership visits and business meetings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
To keep our staff safe we adhere to the CDC safety guidelines and remain in close communication with local health departments, program partners, and local School Districts to work together to serve our youth in the safest way we can.

Skills essential for successful communications include speaking and writing. Physical requirements include sight, hearing, being active and on your feet for a minimum of four hours; adapt to changes in a highly energetic work environment; other duties as assigned.
Environment of the position: both indoors and outdoors; possibility of adverse weather conditions; noise, dust, pollen and insects; including contact with the public. Possible contact with dissatisfied and/or abusive individuals.

● Paid Sick Leave - In accordance with Washington Paid Sick Leave, you will accrue one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked. You are eligible to use Paid Sick Leave after 30 days of continuous employment.
● 401(K) - Automatic Enrollment of 1%, with up to a 4% match, after one year of employment.
● Paid Vacation - Accrues per pay period, totaling one week (30 hours) annually.
● Personal All In Day - One (1) personal All In day (6 hours) annually after 3 months of employment.
