Our cutting-edge retinal office is growing and looking for a highly motivated ophthalmic technician to join our family! A full-time position is available in our warm and friendly office where patient care comes first. Ophthalmology experience is a must and JCAHPO certification is a plus. We are looking for someone versatile to assist with patient intake including obtaining an accurate medical history, visual acuity, perform various diagnostic testing, assisting with office procedures, scribing for physician during examinations, assisting with coding, and surgical booking. The ideal candidate would have strong ophthalmologic/retina knowledge, be able to work well as a member of our small but mighty team, be kind and compassionate and treat our patients like family.
Technician Job Description
1. Conduct patient intake which includes obtaining accurate basic demographics, referral for ophthalmic/retinal consultation, chief complaint and history of present illness, ocular/medical history, social/surgical history, and review of medications/allergies.
2. Perform basics of comprehensive exam accurately and efficiently, including visual acuity testing, confrontational visual fields, intraocular pressures with applanation tonometry, Perkins tonometer and/or Tonopen, motility exam, and identifying an afferent pupillary defect. Recognize abnormal exam findings and respond (eg. notify physician or clinical manager promptly and appropriately).
3. Instill anesthetic and dilation drops per physician order as well as prepare patients with topical anesthesia for injections and laser procedures. Assist physician with performance of those procedures, particularly injection and biologic medication prep, pre-procedure consenting paperwork, and post-procedure instruction review.
4. Prepare and position patient for and perform optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography as per physician order.
5. Review consent forms for ophthalmic and retinal procedures and be able to answer basic questions regarding treatment and procedures, their risks and post-procedure care.
6. Assist with surgical scheduling paperwork/consent forms as needed.
7. Assist with clinical documentation by scribing and documenting exam findings, clinical and ICD-10 codes for common ophthalmic and retinal conditions and input patient superbill. Have a working knowledge of retinal billing/coding.
8. Have a good understanding of patient workflow. Help facilitate patient workflow to identify bottlenecks and work constructively with clinical management to address this and improve patient experience.
9. Maintain confidentiality of protected health information and follow HIPAA standards.
Additional Responsibilities:
1. Prepare procedure and exam rooms, including equipment and supplies for the day. Maintain a clean and tidy work environment. Help coordinate clinical supplies and alert clinical manager when supplies need to be replenished.
2. Assist with front desk receptionist tasks as needed, which include answering incoming phone calls from patients and referring doctor’s offices, scheduling patients, and basic triage as needed. Collect patient copays, deductibles, and balances, as appropriate.
3. Work as a team member and assist with other clinical duties as directed with reason from time to time by Clinical Manager and Physician of the practice.
Qualifications:
1. High school diploma plus successful completion of college degree, certificate program, or JCAHPO approved program for Ophthalmology Assistants or Technicians.
2. CPR certification for Health Care Providers must be maintained. COA or COT certification is preferred but not required.
3. Minimum of 2 years of experience in an ophthalmology setting either as clinical and/or administrative staff.
Skills:
1. Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye and retina.
2. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Absolute dedication to the highest standards of conduct and professionalism.
3. Knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding and procedures.
4. Knowledge of medical terminology as it pertains to ophthalmic vitreoretinal diseases and procedures.
5. Dedication to excellence in patient care, professionalism (both in appearance and conduct) and collegiality/teamwork. Willingness to learn and comply with all local, state, and federal regulations governing practice of ophthalmology.
6. Strong computer skills and basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, able to adapt to the workflow of electronic heath record.
7. Strong interpersonal skills for communicating with patients, families, other healthcare providers, practice administrators and staff from referring doctor’s practices, treating everyone with kindness and respect.
