About this role

Marengo County is seeking dependable and service-oriented individuals to join their Substitute School Nutrition team in Linden, AL. This provisional, on-call position plays a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of students by ensuring they have access to nutritious, safely prepared meals throughout the school day. As a substitute nutrition worker, you will step in as needed to keep school cafeteria operations running smoothly and efficiently. This is a temporary, substitute position, and hours are not guaranteed — assignments are offered on an as-needed basis, determined by the district's daily operational needs. Ideal candidates are flexible, reliable, and able to report to work on short notice. A Day in the Life

A typical day as a Substitute School Nutrition worker begins with arriving at your assigned school and quickly orienting yourself with the kitchen supervisor and the day's meal plan. You'll spend the morning preparing and portioning food items — whether it's a hot breakfast or a full lunch — following all health, safety, and nutritional guidelines set by the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. As students move through the serving line, you'll arrange and distribute food and beverages in a safe and efficient manner, maintaining a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. You may rotate between food preparation, serving, and cashier duties as directed by your supervisor. Throughout the shift, you'll keep your work area clean and organized — washing equipment, wiping down tables, sweeping and mopping floors, and properly storing leftover food and supplies. The role may also include serving meals at approved school functions or special events. The pace is fast but rewarding, and every day you leave knowing you've contributed directly to the nourishment and well-being of the students in your community.

Responsibilities

Prepare, serve, and distribute food and beverages consistent with the nutritional and dietary requirements of the National School Lunch, Breakfast, and After School Programs.
Maintain food preparation, service, and storage areas in an organized and sanitary condition by adhering to established regulations for cleaning and sanitizing all foodservice equipment, tools, dishes, trays, and service vessels.
Operate various foodservice equipment safely and skillfully, and follow proper procedures to report any malfunctions or incidents to the assigned supervisor.
Perform cashier duties as assigned, including collecting payments, balancing cash registers, and preparing deposits.
Inspect food items and supplies to verify quantity and specifications of orders and to ensure compliance with mandated health standards.
Interact in a positive manner with students, staff, administration, and the general public to establish a friendly and welcoming dining environment.
Perform daily cleaning and stocking duties, including storage of food items and supplies and upkeep of tables and other furnishings in the dining area.
Participate in required professional development activities and mandatory training as directed by the district or supervisor.

Requirements

Required

! ALSDE Background Check — completion of the Alabama State Department of Education background screening process is required.
! Jason Flatt Act Training — completion of state-mandated suicide awareness and prevention training is required.
! Erin's Law Online Training — completion of state-mandated personal body safety and abuse prevention training is required.
! Ability to follow food safety, sanitation, and hygiene protocols in a school cafeteria environment.
! Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks including lifting, carrying, and cleaning throughout the shift.
! Demonstrated reliability and ability to report to assigned school locations on short notice as substitute needs arise.

Preferred

Prior experience in food service, cafeteria work, or a related food preparation environment.
Familiarity with National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or USDA Child Nutrition Program guidelines.
Basic cash handling experience or comfort operating a point-of-sale or cash register system.
ServSafe certification or equivalent food handler's permit.
