MISSION: Optimize the health, development, education, and well-being of babies, toddlers, and preschoolers through a family-driven, equitable, community-based system of high-quality prenatal and early childhood programs and services.

The Early Childhood Education and Care Department was established on July 1, 2020. The Department's aim is to create a more cohesive, equitable, and effective early childhood system in New Mexico. That means coordinating a continuum of programs from prenatal to five and ensuring that families in every corner of the state can access the services they need.

Why does the job exist?

This position is essential to the successful delivery of the Family Connects (FC) model, an evidence-based program that provides in home nurse visits to families with newborns, offering direct support during the critical postpartum period. By promoting maternal and infant health through physical assessments, guidance, and compassionate care, this role helps parents confidently navigate early parenthood. It also plays a pivotal part in connecting families with local resources, such as childcare, food assistance, mental health services, and housing support, which they might not otherwise know about or be able to access. Importantly, this position helps identify and address gaps in community-wide resources, serving as a bridge between family needs and systemic solutions. Through these connections, the role strengthens local infrastructure while contributing to long-term well-being, health equity, and child development outcomes. This position empowers families, supports thriving communities, and ensures every newborn gets the healthiest possible start in life.
How does it get done?

The Community Alignment Specialist (CAS) serves as a central connector between families and the resources they need by actively building and maintaining relationships with community organizations and overseeing the Family Connects health resource database. As the public face of the program, the CAS identifies gaps in essential services and works collaboratively to expand access and improve support for families. This role includes advising nurse home visitors, offering guidance on connecting families to appropriate resources, and following up to ensure successful outcomes. In addition to community engagement, the CAS leads outreach and marketing efforts by working with health providers, local organizations, and community leaders to increase awareness and promote program participation. The CAS also contributes to staff supervision, program coordination, and ongoing evaluation to ensure Family Connects continues to deliver timely, effective support for new parents and their newborns.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in Public Health or Education and one (1) year of experience in a health-related field. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. Direct client interaction and some travel may be required.
