Young Management & Consulting (YMC) is seeking an experienced GIS Inspector to support Southern Company transmission and substation capital projects involving the installation, expansion, modernization, and replacement of Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment. The GIS Inspector serves as the Owner's Representative in the field, ensuring construction activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Southern Company standards, project specifications, manufacturer requirements, and applicable industry codes.
The successful candidate will oversee contractor performance, verify installation quality, monitor project progress, witness critical testing activities, document field conditions, and coordinate with engineering, construction management, commissioning personnel, and client representatives throughout all phases of the project lifecycle.
Key ResponsibilitiesConstruction Inspection & Field Oversight
- Perform daily inspection of GIS installation activities on high-voltage transmission and substation projects.
- Verify all work complies with Southern Company construction standards, contract documents, approved drawings, and manufacturer installation procedures.
- Monitor contractor workmanship throughout equipment assembly, installation, alignment, grounding, bus connections, cable terminations, and auxiliary system installation.
- Ensure all installation activities comply with approved construction sequencing and project schedules.
- Inspect foundations, embedded components, support steel, conduit systems, grounding grids, cable routing, and control building interfaces associated with GIS installations.
- Verify installation of disconnect switches, circuit breakers, bus ducts, current transformers (CTs), potential transformers (PTs), surge arresters, grounding systems, and associated equipment.
- Identify construction deficiencies and ensure timely corrective action prior to turnover.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Verify contractor compliance with project specifications, quality plans, Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), and approved work packages.
- Review construction documentation for completeness and accuracy.
- Perform field verification of material installation and approved equipment.
- Ensure all materials installed match approved submittals and manufacturer requirements.
- Monitor equipment preservation and storage procedures.
- Track punch list items through completion.
- Assist with project turnover documentation.
SF₆ Gas & GIS Equipment Inspection
- Verify proper handling, storage, and installation of SF₆ gas-insulated equipment.
- Witness gas filling operations, leak testing, moisture analysis, pressure testing, and gas quality verification.
- Ensure environmental compliance for SF₆ handling and documentation.
- Verify compartment integrity, sealing surfaces, pressure monitoring devices, gas density monitoring systems, and gas piping installations.
- Review gas inventory records and environmental reporting documentation.
Testing & Commissioning Support
- Witness Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) when assigned.
- Support Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), pre-commissioning, and commissioning activities.
- Witness electrical acceptance testing including:
- Insulation Resistance Testing
- Contact Resistance Testing
- Circuit Breaker Timing
- Functional Control Testing
- Current Transformer Testing
- Potential Transformer Testing
- Primary and Secondary Injection Testing
- Protection & Control Verification
- Verify commissioning documentation prior to equipment energization.
- Coordinate with testing contractors and commissioning engineers to resolve deficiencies.
Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare detailed daily inspection reports documenting work activities, manpower, weather conditions, progress, and quality observations.
- Maintain deficiency logs and corrective action tracking.
- Generate Field Observation Reports and Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) when required.
- Verify contractor redline drawings and as-built documentation for accuracy.
- Support preparation of project closeout and turnover packages.
- Maintain photographic documentation of construction progress.
Safety Responsibilities
- Promote Southern Company's Safety First culture.
- Monitor contractor compliance with OSHA regulations, Southern Company safety standards, and project-specific safety requirements.
- Verify proper Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), energized work permits, confined space procedures, and fall protection practices.
- Participate in safety meetings, job briefings, and field audits.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses.
Coordination
- Coordinate daily with Construction Managers, Project Managers, Engineers, Commissioning Teams, and Contractor Superintendents.
- Participate in construction progress meetings.
- Assist with resolving field engineering issues.
- Coordinate inspections with Quality, Environmental, and Commissioning personnel.
- Support project schedule milestones and outage planning activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related discipline preferred.
- Minimum 7 years of electric utility construction inspection experience.
- Minimum 5 years of direct Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) inspection or installation experience preferred.
- Experience supporting transmission substations ranging from 69kV through 500kV.
- Experience serving as an Owner's Representative on utility capital projects is highly preferred.

- Strong understanding of quality assurance and inspection methodologies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic field reporting systems.
