Full Job Description

Staff Accountant

Position Type: Hourly / Non-Exempt 

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer 

Location: Alaska Geographic Central Office, Anchorage 

Pay: $35 - $40 hourly, depending on experience  

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Staff Accountant is responsible for daily general accounting and financial processes. This position is responsible for overseeing accounts receivable and accounts payable records, conducting billing processes, maintaining the general ledger, and managing payroll and personnel files, in accordance with the organization’s mission, strategic plan, and policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Payroll

Maintain employee payroll and personnel records.
Enter biweekly time records into NetSuite for review and commitment by the Chief Operating Officer.
Act as the main administrative payroll contact for the organization.

Accounting

Receive, review, and post monthly income and expenses.
Prepare and file sales tax reports and payments.
Prepare and post Journal Entries, work with the Chief Operating Officer and Administrative team, maintain chart of accounts and recommend adjusting journal entries to the general ledger.
Maintain the accounts receivable subsidiary ledger.
Maintain the asset listing, process monthly depreciation entries, and provide asset acquisition details to auditors.
Process payments for funding requests, company insurance, and process company credit card receipts.
Review the work of other staff as appropriate.
Assist in the preparation and delivery of the annual audit.
Assist in the development of annual budgets.
Coordinate the Branch Financial Aid Process, including preparing Budget Worksheets, processing funding requests, and ensuring sufficient funds are available.

Administration

Assist in maintaining the company SharePoint Site, and respond to field requests for information and assistance.
Assist Executive Leadership in Board Member organization, meeting logistics, and file management.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Perform all essential accounting and payroll functions as a backup to other staff.
Assist in the financial training of staff and leadership.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ABILITIES, OR KNOWLEDGE:

Five years of related accounting/bookkeeping experience.
Three years of experience in using accounting, payroll, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
Problem-solving ability.
Mathematical ability.
Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
Ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks.
Ability to operate effectively under pressure.
Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters.
NetSuite Experience preferred

Excellent organizational, event-planning, and time-management skills with attention to detail. 
High capacity for creativity, resourcefulness, and collaboration

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

BA degree in accounting is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND SAFETY HAZARDS:

Occasional exposure to highly pressured situations; will be faced with the need to prioritize and accomplish many tasks simultaneously.
Occasional extended work hours may be required throughout the year.
Long periods of sitting and working at a computer workstation.
Occasional bending and lifting up to 25 lbs. is required.
