Position Summary
The Utilities Wastewater Collections Operator Trainee is responsible for installing, testing, maintaining and repairing the sewer collection system components, and to perform related technical work as required. This position works according to set procedures under close supervision.
Position Responsibilities- Essential Job Functions
Carries out daily assignments involving the installation, maintenance and repair of sewer system components.
Installs sewer taps, lines, and manholes.
Maintains sewer lines.
Assists in installing, maintaining, repairing and/or replacing pumps, valves, motors and other equipment located in lift
stations and other points within the wastewater collection system.
Operates a wide variety of heavy and light construction / specialized equipment to perform such duties as digging,
carrying heavy objects, backfilling ditches, grading, clearing, probing for utility lines, tamping ditches, bolting valves and
fittings together, etc.
Inspects contractor work to ensure compliance with City of Anderson specifications.
Inspects and assists in the repair of wastewater pump stations and force mains.
Repairs properties after work is completed.
Uses various technologies including tablets, phones, and computers to complete tasks.
Cleans and maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
Performs all work in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and
safety.
Receives and responds to inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance from customers, contractors and the general
public in areas of responsibility.
Prepares and submits detailed work records and reports.
Attends training, meetings, etc., as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Position Responsibilities- Additional Job Functions
Clears and mows city properties, rights-of-way and easements.
Works on-call schedule on a rotating basis.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Experience
Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.
Must possess a valid state driver’s license; must be able to obtain a CDL license with 1 year of hire.
Requires the ability to progress through Wastewater Collection Certifications.
Requires copying, transcribing, entering or posting data or information.
Requires speaking or signaling to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature.
Participates as a crew member in the construction/ installation of manholes and sewer lines.
Assists in making sewer taps
Locates and uncovers manholes
Assist in inspecting sewer mains, manholes, sewer taps, service lines for maintenance needs.
Assist with the operation of closed-circuit television equipment to inspect sewer lines.
Assist with general maintenance work, including cleaning out manholes and sewer lines, assisting with manhole and service line repairs, locating sewer leaks, clearing vegetation and debris from right-of-ways, digging and backfilling ditches, etc.
Loads maintenance and construction materials onto/off trucks.
Maintains accurate and complete records.
Operates vehicles and heavy equipment such as a TV truck, skid steer, backhoe, front end loader, bush hog, tractor, dump truck, trailers; operates gas monitors, vacuum equipment, air compressor, pumps, generators, general hand and power tools.
Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
Works on call on a rotating basis as schedule.
Requires performing semi-routine work following procedures with occasional problems.
Requires using addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages.
Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices.
Requires normal attention for accurate results.
Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.
Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, climbing, stooping, crouching, bending, reaching, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Risk exposure to bright / dim light, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, dust and pollen, animals / wildlife, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock.
Visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, depth perception, color perception.
Responsible for guiding others, requiring a few decisions affecting a few co-workers
Works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine.
Requires regular and sustained attendance.
