Summary
Performs work in specialized field of Radiation Safety. Works under the general supervision of the Radiation Safety Manager. Will perform All RST tasks, including but not limited to count room operations involving smear and air sampling analysis for gross counts, daily source and response checks of handheld instruments, airborne radiological sampling, work coverage contamination and radiation surveys, and documentation for contaminated individual surveys. On this job, the employee may receive occupational exposures to ionizing radiation that are As Low As is Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and within regulatory limits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Monitors intensity of radiation levels in the environment and workplace to determine the types of potential radiation hazards.
- Performs radiation surveys by collecting and processing samples of air, soil, water, vegetation, and other environmental media to determine concentration of radioactivity.
- Recommends to qualified radiation workers the appropriate monitoring devices, protective equipment, and stay time when working in restricted areas.
- Collects and analyzes personnel monitoring equipment and radiation recording instruments for inclusion in summary reports.
- Issues, collects, and ships bioassay kits to offsite laboratory for analysis.
- Performs smear surveys of suspected contaminated area by wiping the floor with smear and counting smear with field instrument and/or count room instrument to obtain contamination counts.
- Informs supervisors when individual exposures and area radiation levels approach maximum permissible limits.
- Recommends work stoppage in unsafe areas, posts warning signs, and ropes off contained areas.
- Calculating the amount of time employee may be exposed safely to radiation in restricted areas, considering contamination counts and health physicist’s determination concerning exposure limits of personnel.
- Instructs personnel in radiation safety procedures and demonstrates use of protective clothing and equipment.
- Monitors time and intensity of exposure of personnel working in radiation waste disposal areas.
- Inspects shipments for contamination and tags shipments in which radiation count exceeds specifications.
- Logs data such as status of areas being decontaminated, rate of radiation exposure to personnel, and location and intensity of radioactivity in contaminated areas.
- Tests detection instruments against standards to ensure their accuracy.
- Ensures the company’s radiation protection standards are in accordance with federal, state, and industry programs, including maintaining records and data as required.

Education and/or Experience
Associates degree in Health Physics/Radiation Safety Technology, Physical Science, or a related technical field, or minimum of fifty (50) hours of related study and minimum one to five+ years’ experience in Radiation Protection, Environmental Monitoring, Industrial/Occupational safety, Radiological Instrumentation or combination of education and experience per the discretion of the hiring manager.
Language Skills
Ability to read, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information on one-on-one and small group situation to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Inventory software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
