JOB PURPOSE
As a Fire Protection Engineer within the Central Programs Engineering Department, you will be responsible for maintaining fire protection design control and providing technical support to the plant in all areas of fire protection.
In this role, you will maintain the design integrity of the Fire Protection Program through effective configuration control of design output documents, including specifications, calculations, drawings, test requirements, and procedures. You will also perform NFPA 805 monitoring and support program improvements while maintaining and developing long-range plans for Fire Protection System enhancements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain the Fire Protection Design Basis at the site.
- Ensure the three Fire Protection defense in depth echelons are maintained:
- To prevent fires from starting (combustible/hotwork controls).
- Rapidly detect, control and extinguish fires that do occur, thereby limiting damage (fire detection systems, automatic fire suppression, manual fire suppression, pre-fire plans).
- Provide an adequate level of fire protection for systems and structures so that a fire will not prevent essential safety functions from being performed (fire barriers, fire rated cable, success path remains free of fire damage, recovery actions).
- Provide cost-effective modification designs to improve the fire protection program and the safe shutdown capability of the plant.
- Provide Fire Protection technical support to operations, maintenance, engineering and other site organizations.
- Develop, plan and coordinate or implement special projects, corrective action plans, and improvement programs to address fire protection plant problems or regulatory sensitive issues.
- Ensure fire protection engineering products are performed in accordance with the site’s fire protection program and are implemented consistent with defined standards and procedures.
- Consistent with the site’s licensing basis, prepare fire protection impact reviews and evaluations, combustible load and suppression capability calculations, and fire hazards analyses.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education Required
- B.S. Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Fire Protection Engineering Technology from an accredited engineering curriculum or equivalent work experience.
- If not a graduate of the nature (B.S. degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Fire Protection Engineering Technology), a minimum of 6 years engineering experience indicative of growth in engineering competency and achievement in a Highly Protected Risk facility is required.
Minimum Experience Required
- Engineer II: 2+ years of experience (1+ year with master’s degree)
- Engineer III: 4+ years of experience (3+ years with PE/master’s degree)
- Senior Engineer: 6+ years of experience (5+ years with PE/master’s degree)
- Senior Lead Engineer: 10+ years of experience (8+ years with PE/master’s degree)
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Proficient in fire protection engineering principles for Highly Protected Risk facilities, including:
- Fire hazard analyses
- Fire modeling
- Fire performance tests
- System failure analyses
- Probabilistic Risk Assessment
- NFPA Code conformance reviews
- Model building code assessments
- Proven ability to interface with Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies.
- Technical understanding of nuclear generation principles and operation is desired.
- Outstanding interpersonal, conflict management, problem solving, and change management skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft desktop software.
