A well-established manufacturing organization (200 employees) is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant with strong cost accounting experience to join its Finance team. This position will support general accounting, cost accounting, inventory management, month-end close, financial reporting, and business analysis activities.
The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting foundation, experience working within a manufacturing environment, and the ability to analyze financial information, identify trends, investigate variances, and provide meaningful recommendations to support business decisions. This is an in-office position, not available for relocation assistance.
This is a hands-on accounting role requiring strong technical accounting knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively across Finance, Operations, Project Management, and Purchasing teams. Position Responsibilities General Accounting & Month-End Close
- Perform month-end close activities, including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Maintain accurate accounting records and ensure completeness and accuracy of financial results.
- Prepare and analyze assigned general ledger accounts, including reserves, prepaid expenses, deferred revenue, commissions, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Review account activity, identify unusual transactions or variances, and research discrepancies.
- Support recurring accounting processes, settlements, and reporting requirements.
- Provide backup support for payroll processing as needed.
Cost Accounting & Financial Analysis
- Support cost accounting activities related to manufacturing operations, projects, and financial performance.
- Analyze project costs, margins, profitability, and actual results compared to budgets, estimates, and expectations.
- Prepare reporting and analysis related to project performance and completed projects.
- Investigate cost variances and collaborate with Operations, Project Management, and Purchasing teams to resolve issues.
- Identify trends, opportunities for improved cost controls, and process improvements.
Inventory Accounting
- Perform inventory accounting activities to ensure accurate inventory valuation and financial reporting.
- Review inventory activity, reports, and balances to identify discrepancies or unusual activity.
- Prepare monthly inventory reporting, including inventory analysis by location and product category.
- Assist with inventory cycle count reviews and investigate significant variances.
- Support standard cost updates and inventory valuation processes.
- Analyze obsolete, slow-moving, and at-risk inventory and assist with reserve recommendations.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and reconciliation documentation.
Commissions, Revenue & Reserves
- Process commission calculations and payments while maintaining accurate supporting documentation.
- Reconcile commission-related accounts and ensure proper accounting treatment.
- Maintain deferred warranty reserves, deferred service revenue, and other accounting reserves.
- Review reserve balances for accuracy and completeness and recommend adjustments as needed.
Financial Reporting, Audit & Compliance
- Assist with quarterly financial reviews and annual audit activities.
- Prepare financial schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for auditors.
- Research accounting issues and recommend appropriate resolutions.
- Maintain organized documentation supporting accounting processes and internal controls.
- Assist with improving accounting procedures, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency.
Additional Responsibilities
- Prepare management reports and financial analysis as requested.
- Process and account for scrap transactions.
- Support special accounting projects and process improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with Finance team members and cross-functional departments to improve business processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience preferred.
- Prior cost accounting experience, preferably within a manufacturing environment, strongly preferred.
- Strong general ledger accounting and account reconciliation experience required.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to analyze financial information, identify issues, and recommend solutions.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Manufacturing accounting experience.
- Experience with SAP or similar ERP systems.
- Experience with inventory accounting and cost analysis.
- Experience with project accounting, job costing, or profitability analysis.
- Experience with incentive compensation plans and commission calculations.
- Advanced Excel and data analysis skills.
