Department:
Retriever Integrated Health (RIH) brings together UMBC’s Health Services and Counseling Center in a collaborative, holistic approach to support student well-being and academic success. Our interdisciplinary team includes compassionate administrative staff and skilled professionals from a wide range of fields—medicine, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, counseling, social work, health education, dietetics, acupuncture, and massage therapy. Together, we provide comprehensive, student-centered care designed to help the UMBC community thrive.

Responsibilities:
Position Overview

Retriever Integrated Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) seeks two Part-Time Mental Health Clinicians (General Associate) to provide comprehensive mental health services to undergraduate and graduate students. This position offers individual counseling, crisis intervention, and diagnostic assessment, playing a vital role in supporting student wellbeing and academic success through evidence-based clinical interventions. The positions report to the Director of Counseling Services.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide individual counseling and psychotherapy to undergraduate and graduate students presenting with a range of mental health concerns
Conduct comprehensive intake assessments and develop treatment plans tailored to student needs
Perform diagnostic evaluations using DSM-5 criteria and evidence-based assessment tools
Offer brief, solution-focused interventions appropriate for a short-term care model
Exercise strong clinical judgment to determine appropriate level of care, with student health and wellbeing as the primary priority (integrated throughout clinical work)
Make timely referrals to specialized or long-term care when clinically indicated, even within a brief therapy framework
Provide crisis intervention and risk assessment as needed
Maintain appropriate clinical documentation in accordance with professional standards and regulatory requirements
Consultation and Collaboration
Consult with campus partners including academic advisors, residence life staff, and faculty regarding student mental health concerns
Collaborate with psychiatry services for medication management referrals when appropriate
Participate in case consultation meetings with counseling center staff
Coordinate care with off-campus providers when students require specialized or long- term treatment

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Required Education

Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Psychology, or related mental health field

Required Experience

4 years of experience in the provision of mental health care to adolescents and/or young adults

Licensure/ Certification Required

Current clinical license in the state of Maryland (LCSW-C, LCPC, or psychologist)

Required Qualifications

Strong clinical judgment and ability to assess appropriate level of care
Strong diagnostic and clinical assessment skills with demonstrated proficiency in DSM-5 criteria
Experience providing mental health services to young adults, particularly in the 18-30 age range
Knowledge of developmental issues relevant to traditional and non-traditional college students
Ability to balance brief therapy models with clinical best practices, always prioritizing student health and safety
Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards
Capacity to establish rapport quickly and work effectively within time-limited frameworks
Ability to recognize when students require specialized or intensive treatment beyond brief therapy scope

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in a college counseling center or university setting
Experience with crisis intervention and suicide risk assessment
Knowledge of common presenting concerns in college populations (anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, relationship concerns, academic stress)
Training in evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as CBT, DBT, ACT, or motivational interviewing
Cultural competency and experience working with diverse and underrepresented populations
Ability to recognize when students require specialized or intensive treatment beyond brief therapy scope
Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic college environment
Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment

Salary:
Hourly Salary Range: Minimum: $45.00 to Maximum: $55.00, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Additional Information: This is a temporary position. Initial contract is for 6 months with the possibility of renewal.
