Job Summary:
The ideal person for this position has a love for seniors and has an understanding of caring for aging issues, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and associated memory issues.
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Medication Technician administers medications as prescribed by the resident’s medical provider and documents the administration, the medication effectiveness, and any noted adverse actions or side effects of the medications in accordance with the established policies and procedures of Inspirations Memory Care, current standards of practice and care and applicable state/federal regulations.
In addition, this position is responsible for caring for residents in assisted living, providing assistance with all activities of daily living as necessary, in addition to all other tasks necessary to provide a clean, safe and home-like environment for residents.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
*Adheres to and conveys a philosophy that supports the dignity, independence, choice, and individuality of residents.
*Administers medications to residents in accordance with the physician orders, as documented on the medication administration record (MAR).
*Accurately records on the MAR medications administered, or withheld or refused, and the reason why.
*Safely prepares, administers and charts, oral, topical, and suppository drugs.
*Observes, records and reports to the Executive Director symptoms and conditions of residents that could be related to medication interactions, adverse drug reactions or medication side effects.
*Determines and records the effectiveness of medications in a timely and accurate manner as required by state and federal regulations.
*Stores medications in a safe and accurate manner in accordance with established policies and procedures of Inspirations Memory Care and applicable state/federal regulations.
*Monitors medications to ensure adequate accountability measures are taken when medications are ordered, received into the facility, administered, and at the change of shift as required by policies and procedures of Inspirations Memory Care and applicable state/federal regulations.
*Routinely inspects, cleans and monitors equipment and supplies to ensure resident safety. Reports any equipment or supply issues to the Executive Director for correction or repair.
*Monitors the need for medication refills and communicates appropriately with the pharmacy and the Executive Director as necessary.
*Receives deliveries from the pharmacy for the Assisted Living facility.
*Reviews resident service plans, social history questionnaires, and staff task lists as needed to gain and maintain familiarity with resident service needs and preferences.
*Reviews the staff communication log and corresponding resident progress notes on a daily basis for information about changes in resident service needs and/or health conditions.
*Provides personal care services (including but not limited to toileting, bathing, dressing, grooming, and ambulation) to residents as assigned and as indicated on resident service plans.
*Demonstrates knowledge of and follows infection control procedures.
*Maintains a consistent level of professionalism with residents, family members, and staff.
*Assists with meal services, including setting up tables, serving meals, and cleaning up the dining room.
*Clean resident Bedrooms once weekly and more often if needed. This includes all surfaces, window sills, baseboards, floors, and bathrooms.
*Dust all tables, chairs, cabinets, lamps, light fixtures, wall vents, handrails, windowsills, blinds, and other fixtures in the neighborhoods at least weekly and more often if necessary.
*Cleans all offices at least weekly; empty trash receptacles daily.
*Dust and spot clean furniture daily. Check for debris and vacuum as necessary.
*Vacuum carpets, sweep and mop floors and spot clean carpets in common areas weekly and more often if necessary.
*Vacuum dining room carpet twice daily following meals.
*Spot clean dining room carpets as necessary.
*Clean and sanitize common area bathrooms daily. Refill paper towels, toilet paper, and soap dispensers daily.
*Clean windows and mirrors weekly; more often if needed.
*Clean and water plants weekly and as needed.
*Empty trash receptacles twice daily if necessary and place in the dumpster.
*Clean inside and outside of washers and dryers and empty lint traps daily.
*Check for marks on walls throughout the facility daily; clean as necessary.
*Identify potential maintenance issues and submit work orders.
*Demonstrate safe and proper techniques for use of chemicals and cleaning solutions.
*Responsible for obtaining cleaning supplies, stocking cart, and maintaining clean, neat, and orderly cart and storage area.
*Participates in ensuring laundry schedules are followed.
*Collects and packs dirty laundry in the appropriate carts for processing according to established procedure. Folds and sorts clothing, linens, and towels items under the direction of the Executive Director.
*Operates washer and dryers according to established procedure.
*Ensures sufficient supplies of clean linens are available in the proper storage areas. Ensures linen carts and closets are stocked properly according to established procedure.
*Cleans, straightens, and rearranges linen storage rooms and carts as required. Marks personal laundry according to established procedure.
*Removes unserviceable linen from the linen system according to established procedure. Receives and records all new linen as required. Take accurate linen inventory according to established procedure.
*Uses and maintains laundry equipment, ensuring safe practice. Maintains an adequate supply of washing chemicals and other related supplies as required. Communicates equipment and supply needs and reports safety hazards.
*Initiate motivation of residents to increase the desire to participate in activities, while being aware of limitations of each resident.
*Leads a variety of small and large-group resident activity groups such as discussion, arts, crafts, music, exercise, cooking, various games (for mental and physical stimulation), re-motivation, gardening, etc. under the direction of the Executive Director.
*Supervise and participate in activities, which include preparations, participation, clean up, and compliance with safety regulations.
*Posts monthly activity calendars and communicates activities to residents, families, staff, and other visitors by maintaining an attractive bulletin board, newsletter, announcements, and invitations to all events.
*Coordinates food needs for programming with the Director of Nutrition in a timely manner and within budgeting guidelines. Utilizes requisition forms to notify the Chef of needs for each event.
*Working with the Executive Director, identify at-risk residents in need of social or psychological support.
*Handle resident requests for transportation, and coordinate rides as necessary.
*Help the Executive Director to maintain a well-organized and labeled event decorations and supplies in storage.
*Visit new residents on assigned neighborhood next working day to obtain an assessment, determine interests and abilities, and to familiarize residents with Inspirations Memory Care programs.
*Monitors for changes in resident needs, preferences, and/or health status, and reports/documents any changes according to established procedures.
*Documents both scheduled and unscheduled care provided, in addition to incidents, behaviors, and out of the ordinary events, including a residents’ refusal of services.
*Communicates to the Executive Director regarding resident health and care issues daily as necessary.
*Responds to emergencies in an appropriate manner as per training received.
*Complies with all administrative and nursing policies and procedures.
*Attends all staff meetings and in-services.
*Make frequent rounds including but not limited to apartment and resident care checks.
*Completes basic first aid for residents as trained and as needed.
*Accompanies residents to outside recreation activity and/or appointments as required.
*Maintains routine comfort, safety, nourishment, and general well being of the resident assigned to his/her care.
*Monitors vital signs as required.
*Assume responsibility for the safety and well being of all residents on the assigned neighborhood in the absence of the Executive Director.
*Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
*Possess knowledge of safe medication administration techniques.
*Ability to learn and work with any new computer software applications.
*Comfortable communicating and working with people at all levels and with senior residents in a positive and professional manner.
*Ability to taste and smell food to determine quality and palatability.
Qualifications:
*High School diploma or equivalent.
*Certified Medication Technician approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
*Certified Nurses Assistant approved by the Maryland Board of nursing.
*Trained in the provision of personal care services according to Maryland Department of Health Regulations.
*Must be able to communicate in written and oral English.
*Alzheimer’s disease/dementia care experience preferred.
*Must be able to interact effectively with residents, family members, and staff.
*Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
*Must be able to interact with other department personnel.
Physical Requirements:
*Must possess a fully functioning sense of sight/hearing or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to allow that position job requirements are fully met.
*Must be able to lift, carry, stand, bend, squat, crawl, reach, kneel, push, pull, and twist using good body mechanics for sustained periods of time.
*Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
*Demonstrates good physical and mental health.
